    Exclamation The Official VAR Thread

I'm against it. I know it's a bit stupid but I'm inclined to believe that things even themselves out over a season, even though that's not really the case.

VAR annoys me. I don't want it in the game. Your team scores a goal and you're celebrating like mad only for the ref to rule it out 20 minutes later.

    What do we think?

I‘m a fan. We have it in the Bundesliga and it works pretty well; decisions are referred to the VAR room in Köln (or the VAR indicates to the local Referee something he - or she, if it’s Bibi Steinhaus - might have missed).

The scoreboard shows a „VAR“ graphic so you know a review is ongoing, and the Ref then indicates the decision.

„I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

And I say that having seen VfB relegated, having had an - at first - perfectly good goal ruled out (correctly) by VAR.

If it means the correct decisions are arrived at then I'm all for it

It's good. Even adds some entertainment. Needs tweaking for football unsurprisingly given it's been around for five minutes.

Main problem at the minute is they take far too long for what look like simple decisions and they were supposed to use it for clear and obvious errors yet seem to spend an age looking at things which aren’t obvious.

    Just needs speeding up.

    I'm undecided.

Anything that breaks up the flow of a game irritates me a bit, like when a player gets injured and all the other players are stood drinking from water bottles next to the technical area whilst he gets treatment.

Maybe if it was quicker it would be better.

I rely a lot on https://www.flashscore.com/ for football scores. VAR is going to cause havoc on that site.

They could pump the ref chat into the free headphones you get in the A block for you.

Ranted about it already, but don't like the referees taking a second look at the side of the pitch.

Too much doubt is sewn then, almost certain to overturn their original decision.

I think England's disallowed goal on Thursday was how it should work. It was so marginal, it is unreasonable to expect humans to get those right every time in real time. It was categorically offside by the laws of the game. The decision was made by qualified officials away from the gaze of the crowd once they'd seen enough to be sure.

Fans in the stadium get to see/hear the decision being made in other sports.

Football is going to have to do this.

Reviews per team can't be used, because it would be another way of wasting time.

Bring in the game clock. 30 mins each way with the clock stopped every time the game stops. Then experiment with reviews . That isn't happening. But it'd better.

I don’t like it. Goal line technology fine, if the tech is there for offside decisions straight away fine but half the time you watch the replay from ten angles, slowed down and you still can’t tell or it is subjective anyway.

I’ve said it before but it has ruined rugby league for me. In games where the video ref is there the official barely makes a decision and just refers every try. They waste time and often you either can’t be sure or the officials even get decisions wrong anyway!! Very often brilliant tries are chalked off because after twenty replays the officials decide the little toe of a winger has brushed the whitewash or in picking up a kicked ball the player has made the slightest handling error that is still arguable!!

I like it in very small doses.

Like others I think interupting the game is annoying as fuck, but on the flipside getting key decisions right make a huge difference to enjoying the game anyway. Just look at the likes of Leeds' handball this year, would have much sooner waited a couple of minutes to have it VAR-ed out.

Personally would only use it for key decisions - red cards, giving questionable goals, penos etc. Needs to be efficient as fuck too. Dudes watching in studio constantly who are there with an answer as quick as fuck when needed.

Give it a year or two and it should be fine.

True but we might’ve had an issue with big nose’s foul on John Ohare at OT, although we were so fucking good we’d have won anyway

I'd argue it should be the ref and only the ref and then completely remove the "VAR cabin", the ref can then review any decision he is not 100% happy with and give the players/captain 2 or 3 reviews. The reason being as football has some very subjective moments so therefore their should be only 1 person making the decision and then in that game it is 100% fair for both sides.
