The problem with the Spanish players of the early 2010s who were obviously out of this world but they also dived and feigned injury a lot so it puts me off them so much. I can’t stand Sergio Busquests...

My friend loved Michael Laudrup. I even thought Brian Laudrup was brilliant.

    What about this?

CR7 Ronaldo or the REAL Brazilian Ronaldo?

    Certainly the latter for me.

I saw the 18-year old Ronaldo playing for PSV, and (as I’ve posted here before) he remains the most naturally gifted footballer I have ever seen. Phenomenal.

I’m perhaps a little younger than you lot as for me it’s Messi hands down. Iniesta definitely a close second.

They make ball control and movement look effortless. The change of pace, the little one-twos and flicks in confined spaces. Even when teams parked the bus, they got through.

Messi of course, not quite an out and out striker like either Ronaldo but a great finisher from inside and the edge of the box as well.

Messi obviously wins, but this is favourite player.

David Beckham was my footballing idol as a child so by default I used to enjoy watching a lot of the foreign United players of the early 2000s.

van nistelrooy was definitely my favourite.

Yes, also one of greatest football shirts. I'd buy that one too, only it's a bit before my time and I only really remember Southampton wearing it.

Maldini at CB!?! You sir, are histories worst monster.

Special mention for Gentile's job on Maradonna ..and Zico...and everyone else who had the misfortune to come up against the most ironically named footballer ever.

The whole Brazilian team in World Cup Final 1970. After getting kicked out of 1966, the Brazilians played some sublime football to win the trophy.

This is one of my favourite football „pub“ discussions - Brazil 70 vs Brazil 82!

I watched that game this afternoon after reading this thread.

He was only a substitute in their first game. Early on Vsn Basten gets a ball over the top. Not a great chance by any means, but can't make anything of it and looks mortal. After that first goal he looks so sharp. That was a minute before half time. 60s later he rounds Shilton and Stevens kicks his shot from a tight angle off the line.

It was a cracking game. England hit the post twice at 0-0, and were on top early in the second half. But Van Basten was just brilliant. Jimmy Hill says at 0-0 England are showing they are actually a match for the top sides in Europe, but a moment of brilliance will decide it. And the Dutch had the brilliant player on the day.

It's argued here that England weren't all that bad in 88...

I watched that Ireland match too (it's been a real lazy bank holiday). Lineker misses four second half, and Beardsley two. Clough is pundit for that one and makes the point. He also says pre game that he's glad Mick McCarthy is passed fit because he's not international class. Liam Brady has a dig back at half time. Which is fair enough, because Adams looks dodgy and Wright, Stevens and Sansom all had a shocker for the Ireland goal.

I adored watching Zidane, just his elegance with the ball despite him being fairly big and unagile.

I remember that 2006 World Cup he was unbelievable, his performance against Brazil was amazing, I still remember the noises the crowd made every time he got the ball on TV.

Guti is another great shout, one of the most underrated players of all time in my opinion.
