Default Matchday 43: Sheffield United vs Nottingham Forest

    Sheffield United vs Nottingham Forest

    Friday 19th April
    Bramall Lane
    KO. 12.30pm

The Reds make the quick trip up the M1 this Good Friday to take on high-flying Sheffield United, but a third defeat in a row for Forest sees them far adrift of the playoff places in eleventh place with very little to play for in their remaining games.

The Blades on the other hand are very much in the mix for automatic promotion sitting three points off second place Leeds and will be looking for a first home win in three games to keep their promotion push alive.

While third-placed Sheffield United are unbeaten in three matches, two consecutive 1-1 draws has muddied their automatic promotion chances. More worryingly, winless in two home games (D1, L1), the 'Blades' have recently let slip an eight-game winning home run in the league.

Having scored in 11-straight league matches here, a run of seven matches without conceding in the Championship at home was recently ended as manager Chris Wilder looks to steady the ship on their 46th Good Friday fixture. Furthermore, while unbeaten in their last seven league games landing on a Good Friday (W6, D1), Sheffield have won just four of their April H2H meetings with Nottingham Forest (W4, D6, L6).

Forest manager Martin O'Neill has his own problems in 11th-place - three over 2.5 match goal losses on the spin has added misery to Forest's 12-game winless run away from home. Failing to score in seven Championship awaydays since mid-December, Forest are the joint-second worst away team over ten games but have scored first in 38.1% of their away league fixtures this season.

However, 1-0 winners in the reverse fixture, Forest marginally lead the H2H record with 48 wins (W48, D32, L45), 20 of which have come here. Winless in their last five trips to Bramall Lane, the Tricky Trees haven't completed the double over their hosts since 2003/04!

Can Forest nick something away from home to arrest their losing streak and begin a positive end to the season? Or will Sheffield be too strong for them?

    Stat Attack!

    • Sheffield Utd have scored in both halves in four of their last five home games

    • Forest haven't scored first in nine Championship awaydays - aside of forcing one own goal.

    • Sheffield have seen over 2.5 match goals in 47.62% of their Championship home matches this season (Forest away: 42.86%).

    Form

    Playing Styles

    Players to Watch

Sheffield’s Billy Sharp (23 league goals) hasn't scored in three outings - but has six career goals against Forest.

Forest’s Lewis Grabban (16 league goals) netted the winner in the reverse (1-0) to open his account against the Blades.

    Played for Both

Billy Sharp: Forest 2012-13 (Loan) / Sheffield Utd 2015-Present
David McGoldrick: Forest 2009-13 / Sheffield Utd 2018-Present
Kieran Dowell: Forest 2017-18 (Loan) / Sheffield Utd 2019-Present (Loan)
Jamie Ward: Sheffield Utd 2009-11 / Forest 2015-Present

    Did You Know?

    • The Blades very nearly signed Argentinian legend Diego Maradona in 1978, the club agreeing a £200,000 fee with Argentinos Juniors to sign the then seventeen-year-old. But when the Juniors demanded more money for the player the United board would not sanction it, opting to sign fellow countryman Alex Sabella instead.

    • Brian Deane scored the first ever Premier League goal with a header at home against Manchester United at Bramall Lane on 15th August 1992.

    • Bramall Lane is the oldest stadium in the Football League still to be hosting matches. The ground was initially used to host cricket, before it was adapted later in the century to become the home of Sheffield United upon their formation in 1889 and has been in constant use ever since, hosting the very first floodlit game along the way in 1878.

    Crap Kit Corner

The only thing I can think they were going for was the "six of diamonds" look. Fail.

Think Sheffield Utd had a player sent off and Sharp and Basham injured at the weekend, could get something here, but won't.

It seems like they're starting to feel a bit of pressure, like they did back end of last season and we shouldn't be feeling any given we've nothing to play for, plus the fact Sharp is likely out. Relax, play some actual football and we can win. MON surely needs a good end to the season now.

Blades have coughed up a couple of victories last two games & are desperately looking for a pushover away from home with a confused game plan.

    Enter Nottingham Forest.

Fuck me theres some red flags here, their midfield looks two classes above ours, their manager has the ability to pick apart any weakness & theyre gonna be desperate to get their push back on track.

Can't make a case for us if we go with the same personnel.

Our away record is crap, they've lost 1 game in the last 14 (in fact they're record in that time has been 8 wins, 5 draws, 1 defeat. Pure Auto form), and we're now in the phase of experimentating.

3-1 win to the mighty Reds

“All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.”

Interesting comparison when you look at where they sit & their season compared to ours. We've not won back to back once all season. There record however is:

4 wins on the bounce Aug-Sep

4 wins on the spin Sep-Oct

4 wins on the trot Dec-Jan

3 wins on the fidaddle Feb

3 wins on the roll in March

They've only lost 2 games back to back once all season, which was the very first 2 games.

Win this one and screw over the Blunts chances of automatic promotion. Horrible club.

Can't wait to see which ex-convicts they sign this summer.

ps get a poll up pol.

Zero? Surely there's some chance of a poll being added? Mods on here are quite reasonable.

With the loss of 3 key men this might be a different game to the one I initially expected.
It will be a defeat still, but by a slimmer margin than I first thought.
    Probably 2-0.

I’ll be sat in the sun getting pissed

Not in front of a tv

If the season is done for the manager and team and we’re seemingly in pre season experimentation mode, then I’m out.

If we lose we can't be relegated and and if we win we can't get promoted. The players appear to be in holiday mood already so even if we won or lost Ten-Nil who cares?

Thuvbin in holiday mood most of the season ! Bit unfair that actually, the efforts been good, but run of the mill players mean you'll always struggle.

    Poor squad.

It’s not a poor squad. Is sheff us better ?

We’ve been unlucky with defensive injuries and with the loan wingers not working out, but the players are there by and large to be better than mid table
