Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun
Along the Long Road and on down the Causeway
Do they still meet there by the Cut
There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before times took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay
    The grass was greener
    The light was brighter
    When friends surrounded
    The nights of wonder
Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by the force of some in a tide
At a higher altitude with flag unfurled
We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed of world
Encumbered forever by desire and ambition
    There's a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
Though down this road we've been so many times
    The grass was greener
    The light was brighter

Ah, but you see Keith - I moved away from Nottingham when I was 22 - down to Exeter.

But the amount of clubs going into admin from it stated that some were close... im sure we went on loan to league 3 around that time as well.

Of course the games moved on since then as have the costs.

Thinking that having the money pulled away especially in the short to mid term will all be a positive is incredibly naive.

Contracts will have been signed and will want honouring.
I don't think that at all.

Definitely be a hit just worth remembering it won't be just for us, it'll be for all clubs as the markets stabilise.

Longer term though, the money going out the game I don't get how you don't see the benefit as a local, standard supporter. \

I said it in an earlier post, The shareholders benefit, the TV companies benefit, the managers and players benefit. Where do we?

You've vented your frustrations yourself at footballers overpaid and not turning up. Would you not take a 4-5 year hit, especially with our recent history in order to see something that goes someway to seeing that resolved?

Clubs went into admission when ITV Digital and Setanta deals went south, because they were spending money they hadn't received. Thinking that swimming in tv cash was the new norm in football for every club, and that no prudence was when the record millions were being spent for the first time on the rights for Rotherham versus Walsall. They weren't going into admibistration at the same rate before those deals existed.

They've all been ruined by the Champions League money pool.

England's mini league of six is the biggest of the four countries plus PSG. On the one hand that makes the mini league at least more interesting, if you're into that. It also makes for more one sided drubbing when they're not playing each other.

It also doesn't matter what's going on elsewhere.

Because it's marginally better than somewhere else, does not mean it isn't a problem. Who gives a crap about La Liga or Serie A?

The difference being that football is now technically and tactically superior to the dysfunctional long ball game played on crap pitches that most English teams favoured a few decades ago.

But I get the point that some prefer amateurish bands playing to a small crowd in small rundown venues, and hate it when those bands become more professional and successful. Again, a fundamental difference is that football is a sport rather than a creative art form. Although it could be argued that heavy metal guitar playing in the 80s was more of a sport than a creative art form.

We're discussing the league and not the teams in it.

Dropping in the three best teams into your local pub league would dramatically increase the overall standard of competition and instantly ruin the competition, and reduce a good portion of the fixtures to pointless exhibition matches.

I don't watch much golf. I'm not against the sport, it's just a long way down my list of favourites. I could watch the open, but I can't remember the last time I did.

Every time two years I watch the Ryder Cup. Or listen on the radio at work when I can't watch it. Follow the whole thing. There are 28 matches and, but for the odd singles game still on the course by the end of Sunday, they are all important and could all go either way. It's a brilliant sporting competition.

Premier League is the opposite. I love the sport, have always followed it and watch a lot of football. After the WC I thought, I'm going to watch MOTD this year. It's the same players, it has to be somewhat fun. I don't remember how long I lasted, but it can't have been more than three weeks. It's mostly exhibition matches. It's a brilliant sport and terrible sporting competition.

But if you leave business men with all the power to shape the competition, you get a business competition.

I dont think anything will be resolved or reset though thats the point, everything will just go to shit and done on a shoestring like it was in the 80s. It really was amateur hour back then.

The foreign owners like ours are here to get to the big league and its riches, take that away and their interest goes as does their money.

What are we really left with? The ground needs massive amounts of investment for starters and that cost is only gonna increase as time goes on.

Pride, passion and the meaning of football being more than just the revenue generated.

All of which are things that money can't buy.

I think we are probably seeing it from 2 different angles. Discussing it as a market, a financial industry, it's clear that the PL and Sky are wonderful for it. As a sport though and as a supporter that goes to games, it to me is a disaster. The schedules move around all the time, just like my biggest day in the footballing calendar now being moved to a Monday evening. It's costing me a fortune to pursue my passion and there is now a way of playing, an attitude and a general commercialisation of football that just leaves me feeling a bit bitter about the whole thing to be honest and what it's become.

When mega bucks are at the centre of everything that revolves around a sport that should generate such passion and delight amongst the people privileged to be involved, there must be something wrong there surely?

The extra money has brought a lot of positives and also some negatives to the game in this country. Personally I feel proud that we have the most watched league in the world. Some people seem obsessed with the money and the financial aspects, but I don’t care about that when I watch football. I enjoyed watching the great Chelsea team of 2005, Man City’s last minute title win, and the truly great City side of last season every bit as much as I enjoyed watching the other great sides of the past.

I’ve even enjoyed some moments of watching Forest over the past decade. For me it feels like a priviledge to watch Carvalho every week, not because he is our record signing, but because I enjoy watching good players who can create a moment of magic. It was the same when Francis scored in the European Cup. I didn’t care that he was the most expensive English footballer ever at that moment, just as I won’t care about the money if we get promoted and I am able to go and watch my team compete in the top flight again.
