    Default Gerald Clough's Newagents

Hi everyone - I'm working on a book project, and one chapter opens with the story of the European Cup wins. I've heard a rumour that Brian Clough took the trophy with him to his brother's newsagents and kept it behind the counter when he served customers. Can anybody confirm this rumour? It would be amazing if I could interview anyone who was actually served by him

This is correct I picked a paper up one Sunday morning, and on the counter were the league championship and League cup trophies.

I picked both up,and a year later I picked up the European Cup,unfortunately never got to lift the FA cup

Great to hear! I was worried that this story was a bit too good to be true! Would you consider being interviewed for the book? Either by phone or Skype, or we could meet in the Sherwin Arms?

I believe this was reported in the NEP at the time with pictures so it might be worth checking their archive.

What an awesome story to tell. You think that you can't love the man any more than you do already and then something like this pops along.

Good luck with the book BestEVer.

    Was it his son's newsagents?

My Mum wandered in there to get a card for my birthday. Clough was in giving orders telling shopowner/son(?) to help her choose one, complaining that the selection wasn't very good.

My Mum had bought his autobiography that week for me for a present, so popped back to work to fetch it and get it signed. Got the message telling me to 'be good' on the inside cover. I love it.

Not sure to whom this is aimed at.

My Dad took me in with the promise of 10p for each word I spoke to him. Hello and Yes were all I could manage. Star struck to say the least.

A few years later, when managing a cub football team, I wrote to him asking if Forest could help us out with some kit. Got a brilliant letter back from him explaining how most of the old shirts ended up being used as dusters.

Me also. When I met Mr. Clough when he was signing copies of his autobiography in Waterstones (although it wasn’t called that then, I think?) all I managed was „thanks Mr. Clough!“

In response I got that smile and „call me Brian!“
