Good advice. And reminds me, I used to hair rig artificial corn. Works really well and gives you 100% confidence it hasn't been robbed by small fish.

On still water I will fish one real and one floating on a hair to pop it off the bottom, just enough to float it about half an inch. I'm looking forward to Sunday now, the hemp I cooked has come out a treat.

    Had a so-so day Friday.
In the morningwith the sun shining it was a catch every cast.
Small roach, some nice dace and perch.
At 12:30 a thunder storm rolled in.
We had to take shelter in the car as it was torrential and the lightning made it a bit risky, what with 13 foot carbon fibre rods!
When we were able to resume the outfall was shipping thousands of gallons of grey water, straight from the storm drains.
The rier level rose a good foot and from 2:00 until 4:30 neither of us had more than the occasional bite.
After 4:30 bites returned and roach in particular were active.

I had my first session on hemp and tares today. Never fished them and by god they were bloody hard. Fished a pole at about 12 m on the Nene, lots of bits, and I mean lots, but it took me 15 bites at least to get one bloody fish. Had about 10 by the end, Roach, hybrids and chublets but it was bloody hard work. I must have been doing something wrong.

We have a German channel here ( Chris flare sent up) DW its all in English and they were saying how popular city fishing has become in Berlin. Loads of young kids with just a small rod and a tackle box pulling some quite nice fish out.

The famous River Neckar runs right through Stuttgart, and I frequently see Anglers along the banks, and most seem to be doing quite well.

Is it still the case that catch-and-release is illegal in Germany?

I know it used to be. Courtesy of some well-meaning but completely wrong 'help' for the fish from the Green Party. On the basis that only fishing for food can be justified, but fishing for pleasure can't be. So by law you had to kill everything you caught, and not put them back to fight another day.

I know the thought that not everything is better in Germany is an alien one to you Chris, but that is certainly one thing they got wrong.

The lads on the programme I watched were fishing for perch and pike to eat but it did show them throwing the small ones back in.

I honestly don’t know the answer to that.

I know you can (or course, because, Germany) join a fishing club that gets special access and stuff like that though.

    There’s clubs for absolutely everything.

Had a quick google and apparently C & R is indeed still illegal in Germany. And Switzerland have followed suit.

    Simple vile.

Fishing clubs? If only we Brits had thought of that. Clever chaps those Germans.

About 11 or 12. Night fishing on the navigation. Everyone wearing tights and double clothing. AFter a few hours it got boring as fuck. So we went off for a wonder. At some point we came across a canal boat that had a large pile of what looked like coal on it. I decided to mount the pile.

Of course, it was a dredging barge and the pile was silt from the bottom of the canal. I sank in faster than quick sand.

When mates had stopped laughing they pulled me out.

Was a good job I was wearing double clothes. Took the outer layer off and ditched them in the canal.

A little later when we decided to go home, we walked across to Trinity square to get the bus. Only I didn't have any bus fare. My fare was in my outer jeans that were now in the bottom of the river.

My mates all got the bus and took my kit.

I got on my jacksy and walked home to Daybrook.

Went fishing a couple of times after that, but never got the bug.

Yes I just read it. Apparently its against the law to cause an animal suffering in Germany. So I suppose the theory is if you make C and R illegal you will only catch what you can eat.
The lads on the TV definitely threw some back in, so they can't be enforcing it that well. The bloke they spoke to has his own you tube channel on city fishing in Berlin.

I'd like to think it's a widely ignored law.
Of course they might have only been putting them back because they were undersized.
Taking everything you catch will only serve to deplete stocks and it's a funny kind of logic that killing an animal is better for it than releasing it as unharmed as possible.

It is in Switzerland - my mate is on a mini-European tour and decided to fish the lake at a village he was staying at.
He had a right argument with the bailiff at the water when being told he had to take his catch home.
being in a hotel my mate couldn't really do that.
The other option was to leave the catch on the lakeside bank.
"Eet eez zee law!" he was told.
