Was there actually a company called Fawaz Fridges? I thought it was just an invention in order to give money to NFFC.

From memory, if the company existed other than on paper, it had a hideously unprofessional website that looked like it had been designed by a child, and gave absolutely no information about any specific products or projects, other than a few grainy photos taken at long distance on the cheapest camera possible, of a quality that suggested they’d been taken as part of an espionage mission somewhere inside the Soviet Union, circa 1976.

Yes, against the winners of the Mega Bowl. The winners of that then play the winner of the Cereal Bowl vs Soup Bowl match

This decade's cigarette companies. They're names were all over sporting competitions in the eighties until somebody did something about it.

Payday loan companies were creeping in a few years back until some regulation came in there too. Betting companies will go the same way eventually.

The ease in which you can bet is dangerous. You don't have to walk into a depressing looking bookies to blow your cash abd increase your debts any more. You can do it from your sofa while your waiting for the second half to start...or even better from the pub when you've had a couple and are no longer thinking logically... or from the classroom when you're fifteen because there's nothing morally bankrupt about that.

And it's the sheer volume of them as much as anything. It's impossible to watch sport on a commercial TV channel, online, listen on commercial radio without being bombarded with messages telling you the game will be better if you have money on it. It won't, the real odds are it'll be worse.

The lad bantz tone to them is patronising. Of course everybody who likes football is straight out of the nineties, reading Loaded magazine, walking around pretending they are in Lock, Stock n Two Smoking Barrels.

The kids in the classroom ad never should have passed by whatever insufficient censorship does exist at the moment. 'Hey impressionable teenagers with phones at school, give us the money you don't have, you'll love it...it's the cool thing to do...here's a catchphrase to say whilst you do it'.

In general the incessant ads are all so inane and banal it's hard to tell if they are actually satirising themselves or not. I used to get home and stick the sports channels on in the background regardless of what was on it. Can always watch sport in passing. But I can't take any more of Ray Winstone.

    Balls to BetBright.

I used NCSA Mosaic, the forerunner of Navigator.

However, prior to that we had a modded version of bGopher that could transcode html pages to a set of folders/docs to represent a gopher menu structure.

Used to put the Forest player names into Football Manager. By season three I had Franz Carr on both wings and in goal, and there were four Burys in div 4.

Chuckie Egg = Best. Game. Ever.

Spend 1 hr to load the game on cassette, play 120 levels for 2 hrs, get eaten by Chuckie's Mum when she escaped from her cage and repeat.

    Don't people have free will?
I don't bet with any bookie - never have, never will.
I do like to play a game of pontoon with my mates for a few bob now and again, or a game of cribbage with 10p at stake for the rubber with me old dad (he calls me his pension robber 'cos I always win).
No amount of football shirt ads, or that fat London actor will take away my free will not to give money to the bookies.
Mind you, I do keep making my stockbroker rich by paying him to transact share deals - which I suppose is akin to giving money to a bookie!

The problem aint the 2 pound accas that fat Ray advertises... the problem are the machines in the shop... if they were banned bookies would shut en mass over night.

They changed the law and massively reduced the maximum stake on those recently which will really hurt the bookies

Repton. Now that was a game. Even had its own level and asset designer. Talk about being ahead of your time!

Used to play 3 card brag after payday when I first joined the Army. Guys would walk up to the desk, get their pay in their sweaty hands and they go round the corner and blow it all on the card game!

Mind you, we had food, clothing and accommodation provided so they had no problem lasting the week.

There's four bookies that I know of within a two-minute walk of my front door.

Granted I'm in zone 2 London, but from what I've seen this is pretty typical of elsewhere in the country.

The UK clearly has a gambling problem, especially in poorer areas. On the one hand, it is infinitely better to go through the bookie than the dodgy guy down the pub who sends his boys over to break your legs when you don't pay up, but on the other the constant advertisement preys on the weak-willed and people in poverty.

I personally believe in freedom of choice, the same as I do with drugs. But more stringent advertising regulations would do a lot of good.

I agree Captain. I have never been a gambler, I haven't smoked fags since my teens but I do enjoy beer, wine and spirits.

I would allow the fag and booze sponsors back into football because their money is just as good as everyone elses and bugger the Moaning Minnies. They will want food adverts banning next if it contains meat, they always want something to complain about.
