Default Are you serious about promotion?

Don't be put off by the provocative Fawazesque thread title, I have a legitimate question for you. What do you really want for Forest?

I have often seen here pejorative comments about the Premier, the commercial turn of modern football, the big clubs with their high-paying, consumer fans, their lifeless stadia etc. Moreover, part of the whole Warburton debacle was the disappointment of some of you for owners sacking managers because of results. I have also seen a (healthy in my view) insistence on playing the right kind of football and on a good old-fashioned football experience on the field. Finally, I have often seen calls for tighter ties to the community (ties which the new regime, initially at least, promised to forge), as an essential aspect of ‘being Forest’.

My question therefore is, how do you view the future of Forest?

    1. Stability, Championship, good football, stars of the academy, affordable ticket prices, pride in the achievements of the past, the occasional success against the Arsenals of this decayed football of theirs. We don't care about the behemoths of modern football, let them have their damn Premier and their Champions League and their plastic teams built for plastic fans. We like real football, the old-fashioned football experience. Success? Meh, we prefer the Mull of Kintyre, not to be forced to listen to sponsors’ jingles.

    2. We want success and we want it now. We are two times Champions of Europe and nothing below this can ever be good enough. The Premier is the obvious goal, and we want to stay there and be competitive there. Of course we would like to do it the right way, of course we would like to succeed having first built solid football foundations, without moral sacrifices, and without having to succumb to total commercialization, but let’s not kid ourselves, we would brush aside any moral hesitation if real success came sooner rather than later.

    3. It’s both Ithaca and the journey, obviously, not one or the other. It goes without saying that we want to make it to the top, we do not want to be second tier for the remainder of our days, but only in the right way. If we build the foundations of success and success does not come immediately, no problem; we have waited for decades, we can wait for more.

So, how serious are you about promotion?

That's Mark Arthur, Doughtys right hand man and author of the "serious" quote when we were rotting in League one and they needed to shift more tickets.

That is one Mark Arthur, Chief Executive during the reign of Nigel Doughty, who along with said owner was infamous for overseeing the financial meltdown of the club, the fireselling of our best players leaving us with a cripplingly threadbare squad, before his pièce de résistance - the decision to mail a flyer to Forest fans upon which were written the immortal words:

"We're serious about promotion. Are you?"

We were relegated that very season.

I can only speak for myself GBG, a combination of what you posted which is probably impossible.

If we could be a quality top flight team again and keep traditions and what integrity is left intact, that's what I want.

Being the next Chelsea or Man City doesn't appeal, they are virtually completely different clubs with a different fan base to what they were.

Depends on what you think his remit was, whatever way you slice it The worse years we had were with him.

He was very good at talking down to us fans as riff-raff.

Also was the 'master negotiator'. Would find ways to ruin the most simple of transfer deals and then when dragging his feet and not a sealing a deal he would say 'but they wanted to come' and while all this happened we had shit transfer window after shot transfer window.

In answer two your question GBG. Number 3. Achieve what best you can achieve with what your clubs strengths are. Give of your best doing things how they meant to be done. Of course once a bit of success is achieved you will need that killer and winner's instinct. I don't think Forest should ever have a big headed mentality.

You could counter that he also over saw our last two playoff finishes.

and ironically if my memory serves me correctly one of the goals that sealed our fate was scored by one of his totally botched transfer targets.

It was in the closed season when we relegated - first former European Champion to drop to the third tier - and, according to Mark, we would be going back up at the first go. But it was essential that wevall bought season tickets.

I should have added a fourth choice: Are you serious GBG? This is LTLF, do you expect us to lose such a lovely opportunity to go off topic?

This thread heeds a health warning on it, looking at some of the pictures...

    Do I want promotion?

    Sort of.

As long as we have a squad to get more than 11 points in the Prem, I'll take a season in the SkyWankFestLeague for one reason.

    Well.

100 million reasons, if we're going to be honest.
There is no point in a league in which the aim is to finish 17th.

We're not going to win it so other than the £££, promotion serves no higher purpose.

Trouser the cash. DON'T spend it on stupid salaries.

DO spend it on a new Main Stand and some alterations here and there, updates and upgrades.

The Championship is a league we can reasonably have a crack at. The odd season in the Prem will do me for a few years.

The trick is to pocket the cash before the game implodes and there IS no money....

By "relegation battle", do you mean 7th, 12th or 14th?
