Default Nottingham Forest's top ten greatest managers of the last 150 years

The top ten managers of our first 150 years, ordered by honours won and then win percentage.

To qualify managers must have been in the job for a minimum of half a season/23 games, and the list takes no account of which division the wins were accrued in, or ability to fall out with chairmen.
Obviously there's a strong argument that Clark's win percentage should put him above Masters, and Carey should rank above Davies as all his wins were in a higher division, or maybe both should rank above Calderwood for similar reasons... Discuss

    1. Brian Clough (1975 - 1993) 46.18% honours 11 - European cup, European cup, European Super cup, First division champions, League cup, League cup, League cup, League Cup, Promotion to Division one, FA Charity shield, Anglo-Scottish cup

    2. Billy Walker (1939-1960) 41.85% honours 3 - FA Cup, Third Division Champions, Promotion to Division one

    3. Harry Haslam (1897-1909) 40.69% honours 1 - FA Cup, Second division Champions

    4. Dave Bassett (1997-1999) 42.86% honours 1 - Second division Champions

    5. Bob Masters (1912-1925) 28.05% honours 1 - Second division Champions

    6. Frank Clark (1993-1996) 41.01% honours 1 - Promotion to Division one

    7. Colin Calderwood (2006-2008 ) 41.91% honours 1 - Promotion to Division two

    8. Harry Radford (1889-1897) 39.20% honours 1 - Football Alliance Champions

    9. Billy Davies (2009-2011) & 2013-2014) 41.93% honours 0

    10. Johnny Carey (1963-1968 ) 38.52% honours 0

I like a clever response, one you have to think to get. Under your own embargo, this is one.

Interesting. I wouldn't have Colin Calderwood anywhere near a list of our top ten managers ever, for that reason I have no respect for this list.

Top flight years under which managers

    1892-1906 (Haslam)
    1907-1911 (Haslam, Earp)
    1922-1925 (Masters)
    1957-1972 (Walker, Beattie, Carey, Gillies)
    1977-1993 (Clough)
    1994-1997 (Clark, Pearce)
    1998-1999 (Bassett, Atkinson)

    FA Cup winners:

    1897/98 - Haslam
    1958/59 - Walker

    FA Cup finalists

    1990/1991 - Clough

    FA Cup semi-finalists

    1891/1892 - Radford
    1899/1900 - Haslam
    1901/1902 - Haslam
    1966/1967 - Carey
    1987/1988 - Clough
    1988/1989 - Clough

    European seasons

    1961/1962 Fairs Cup - Beattie
    1967/1968 Fairs Cup - Carey
    1978/1979 European Cup - Clough
    1979/1980 European Cup - Clough
    1980/1981 European Cup - Clough
    1983/1984 Uefa Cup - Clough
    1984/1985 Uefa Cup - Clough
    1995/1996 Uefa Cup - Clark

Just some info to help make a decision.

    For me
    1. Clough
    2. Haslam
    3. Carey
    4. Walker
    5. Clark

That is on pure winning medals/highest league position/finals/semi-finals etc. But in importance and footballing philosophy Walker has to be 2nd to Clough. He picked us up from rock bottom.

I agree that Carey was second only to Clough. With a bit of luck, he could have done the double.

If we were talking best Forest manager 1999–2001 he might have been mentioned by some in their top ten

I'm sure he'd have got some votes, maybe from his cat, or something?

Frank Clark is very underrated at this football club

No idea about managers before my time

    Clough
    Carey
    Clark
    Bassett
Calderwood (everyone slates him, but he got us back up!)
    Davies
    Hart

Don't think we've had any other managers recently who've been in the job long enough to qualify!

If Warburton went on to win the exact same trophies which Clough has, would he be the better manager because of the state of the modern game?

    Very true.

I just wonder if folk would embrace him like they do/did Clough, and how such an achievement would be viewed in today's game?

It would be a better achievement than what Clough did, not to take away from what he did though.

    And it won't happen anyway.
