Thread: Match day experience City Ground versus Old Trafford

Default Match day experience City Ground versus Old Trafford

Got an invite to the Man U game last night, and yes I know I shouldn't but as its 50 years since as I was last there watching Forest in 1967, I though why not.
The Game was OK with Man U completely in control, but the match day experience was rubbish, and any one who complains about the World Famous City Ground doesn't know what we have.
    - Started outside with over zealous security and full body searches, and for example bags not allowed in
    - No beer inside the ground at European games
    - Absolutely no build up before the game, and half the crowd get to their seats literally at kick off
    - No opening song, MOKT isn't the best song but at least its ours and creates and atmosphere
    - one section near the corned flag where people are chanting, but overall the crowd was really quiet
    - no big screens, so no in game replays
    - when they score, some clapping, and thats it, no big song, no music
    - mostly middle aged Mancs around us, who keep moaning about everything,
    - very few families in the crowd behind the goal
    - floods of people leaving early

so apart from the food and drink which were great inside and outside the ground, and the sheer size of the place,

    City Ground wins easily

Nice to hear, thanks for posting. Sounds like Old Trafford has lost its soul.

They should rename it the Tourist Trap

Yep, I think too many long time season tickets holders who have seen it all, and too many there for the day fans, means totally lacking in atmosphere.
I am sure its different when L'pool, City, Chelsea visit, but this sounds like how it is most games.

I think some of the magic of Old Trafford died with the clubs endless success.

I remember going against Liverpool, Villa and Everton in the 1980's and the place was electric. Singing in pubs, the walk down Warwick road with all the street vendors and the atmosphere near the away fans in the ground was great, all surrounding sections singing, plus the Stretford End.
You look at the place now and there's loads of tourists in the crowd, but I suppose it's the same at Arsenal, Man City and the others.

Remember that scene from Pulp Fiction, in the pawn shop?

Well, we sent Trent End Scott round to Andy's.

    He's moaning, all right.

I hate to say this, (I dislike anything to do Liverpool F.C), but it looks like Anfield has the best atmosphere in the modern day Premier League grounds.

    Always remember this.......

Frightening how many tourists actually go to these "big" club games now.

Part of me is actually reall glad that we've stayed a low-key club during the plastic-fan virus of the 00's.
If we do make the Prem again, I really hope that the club aims to make the local roots & connections flourish ahead of the easy buck abroad (Greece excluded for obvious reasons of course)

We've always done our own thing. Here's hoping that continues.

“All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.”

They've still got the build up and colour with YNWA, but it goes a bit flat 10 minutes in. Like most places.

Makes me laugh how folk go on about the atmosphere at Stoke being great. When we're they born? I take it they didn't watch football in the 60's/70's/80's.

I feel for the modern day fan, never seen a proper ground with terracing, proper singing with a good atmosphere. Away end terracing, good banter with opposing fans, no stewards killing the atmosphere. Every ground back then had its own character and soul.

Sorry young 'uns of today, it's nowt like it used to be.

Took it for granted that it would never change, god how I miss it.
Ironically, approaching my fifties I'd probably be in the seats even if there was terracing

    I've asked this before but,

If watching football was so good in the 80's how come no one wanted to watch it and crowds were at an all time low?

I can only speak for myself Ravi. I prefer the match day experience of the 60s,70s and 80s to that of the modern era.

    I never missed a game.

Probably because a lot didn't fancy getting punched in the gob, before, after or during the game.
