Bringing Murphy in makes perfect sense, either as an alternative option - or to complement, Brereton, Cummings and (should he stay) Vellios.

Importantly, he gives us an extra physical presence up-top should circumstances require it.

Not sure about paying over £2m for a 34 year old striker but he was Championship top scorer 3 seasons ago and was a pretty decent supersub for the Toon last season.

I don't think we can go wrong in signing him for a couple of seasons, on a par imo with Nugent, and he's not doing too bad with the sheep.

Yann Kermorgant scored 18 goals for Reading last season including the goal that took them to the play-off final and he's 35.

He looks like an old-school Championship striker; perhaps because of his age. I read that Newcastle fans have only the best words for him. I cannot comment on the price; I find your transfer fees crazy anyway. What looks not a very clever decision is the two year contract which is a bit too much for someone his age, unless it is one year with an option to renew for a second year.

    Journeyman on a meal ticket.

We keep doing it over and over and over again and getting worse and worse each season.

Any chance you can put the brakes on this deal your end?

No, sorry, I was told it is good for my image in Britain to let the guy with the Scottish surname to run the show. In case you notice any wrinkles in my image in the British press please let me know and I'll fire him on the spot.

He's going to be the new Dele Adebola. Play as the target man in away games and we'll reach the playoffs

Can't believe Chelsea are gonna sign Morata and we're paying 2mil for this hasbeen.

Lack of ambition will relegate us!!!

Not remotely exciting but I don't think he'd be a pre-retirement passenger either. He's limited but a good honest player who will work hard and put his body on the line. Ideally, we'd be using him as a supersub and to give BB a rest when he needs it. In that light, not a bad option to have.

Here, by the way, is Rafa Benitez on Murphy in The Irish Times today:
"I’m really pleased with him, and his contribution last year was really important, not just because he was playing some games and scoring goals but also in the dressing room. He’s so positive."
I know he's flogging him off, but he seems to have genuine respect for him.

A lot of the Newcastle fans seem to think the same way as well which is good.

Huge reservations about the transfer fee and wages, hopefully he proves me wrong and turns out to be an inspired signing rather than another aging player topping up their pension.

The fact that Newcastle fans seem to quite like him gives me some hope that this one will turn out to be alright.

Seems far too much for a 34 year old who wouldn't get near Newcastle's first team. We're doing them the favour with this.*

*as ever I'm happy to be be proved wrong.

If it's Murphy for £2m or Jerome for £6m, then it's Murphy for me
