They couldn't on FM, and nor could Forest, he just went when the window opened.

Was stated as a compulsory deal which will be made permanent in January, so no, he's already for all intents and purposes a Blackburn player.

What's the difference between a compulsory deal and an actual signing? Just the date of the signing?

If so why aren't more deals done this way to beat the transfer window restrictions?

Pretty much, and deals used to be done a lot like this. That's why they closed the loan window in accordance to the transfer window a couple of years ago.

When everybody else changes the transfer window dates too I would imagine it would go back to normal.

Yes, it was a compulsory signing for January because we were outside the transfer window. If we were in it, it would have been a transfer there and then.

It doesn't happen often because most teams have done all their signings by the end of the window, although I'm sure now Forest have set trends in it (and mutual terminations before signing) then we'll see it more often.

    Thanks guys

Just seems like the transfer window is pointless if teams can make a mutually-binding contract to buy

There would probably be some severe financial penalties for breach of contract in both the deal between the clubs and the players contract, that would exceed the amount of money they have committed to for the player, plus all kinds of football league sanctions.

I have a sneaking suspicion that he'll be back with us come January.

As it stands, he is still under contract with Forest.

In the same way Forest wouldn't pay the money up front after buying a player if the transfer structured over a number of years, but we wouldn't get to keep the money forever.

He's a Blackburn player, he aint coming back to Forest.

Judging by their forums, they don’t seem best pleased with what they’ve seen.....

Far from shit. More like a raw talent who needed a bit of proper coaching.

    19 years old.

Brereton may be struggling at the mo, but give him a few years and he'll prove a capable striker at this level IMO.

Still some way to go, but so have most 19 year olds.

He wouldn’t be getting any game time at Forest either.

In the circumstances it was a good deal all round.

Perhaps, but I think the Blackburn move will prove to be a terrible one for him and has set his career back a bit at the very least. Left here because he was shunted out on the wing, yet finds himself in the same position at Blackburn but with the millstone of a £7m price tag around his neck.

He should have known his place and stayed here then, instead he kicked up a fuss to sit in the exact same place he would here

Whilst I don't disagree, that doesn't change the fact that he's still only 19 and had a good 4-5 years to improve regardless.

Folk make mistakes. Especially at 19. That's life.

There's still a chance he could return here and play for us, so let's not stick the knives in too much just yet.

No there isn’t. He’ll become a Blackburn player when the transfer window opens.
