Out of the young players. 1) Yates 2) Anel 3) Appiah 4) Crookes 5) Edser is probably the picking order for those who haven't started for Forest yet.

Think Gabriel and Iacovitti may be fighting for their Forest futures.
Think it would be a shame to get rid of Iacovitti. He looked pretty handy in the first few games in the Montannier reign. He's had two more seasons since then, surely he's worth it as backup on cheap as chip wages?

Both Gabriel & Iacovitti are still under contract next season. Think it's just the nature of football. Some people rise unexpectedly and some don't progress as expected. I think right now he is in a battle to push for first team place especially with Crookes' progression.

Loans are so difficult to judge. Take Iacovitti's last loan - FGR fans liked him a lot. Why didn't he carry on there ? Felt at the time he was wrong to not choose County.

At the end of the day Iacovitti is a centre-back. We have Worrall in the first team with Ahmedhodzic, Crookes, Iacovitti as young professionals trying to make their way in the centre-back position. With these 3 - they can't be playing u23s football next season. I think they will want the u23 back line to be Richardson/Harbottle/Stewart/Preston (with Bondswell covering Preston).

Does it work in Iacovitti's favour that he can play left back as well? I would think being able to be used in 3 of the 4 positions along the back would do so. Especially since the position at the moment is a large question mark for the club.

It may well do. But don't forget Crookes has played LB, LCB , CB & DM himself & Ahmedhodzic has played RB, RCB, CB, LB & DM too.

Crookes and Iacovitti were in the same age group (with Yates & Elvis Otim who is still here) and Crookes was playing left-back and Iacovitti CB when schoolboys - when Crookes got to 18s they played him DM and then back to CB. Same with Yates played RB often in his first year with the 18s. I like how the academy go about their business really. No rigid development. Always challenging.

The last u23 game the back line was Anel Hobbs Crookes Iacovitti - so both Anel and Iacovitti played as full-backs

Interestingly both Crookes and Iacovitti played on the left-side of a back 3 this season whilst on loan.

Personally I wouldn't write AI off but I am certainly very close to writing Gabriel off unfortunately.

I mean, it's one thing to say what you would like, ideally, and another thing to reconcile your principles with reality. Boards are scared of very small squads because they fear what will happen if a couple of transfers don't perform or there's a larger number of injuries, DoFs may not achieves the sells and clean-up of unwanted players, etc.

I don't think Karanka will have a squad of 22 men. In my view, for a long and hard tournament like the Championship, you need something like 27 men (including goalkeepers and youngsters).

Perhaps what they meant was that they wanted a squad of 25 of their choosing, which would typically take three of four years to get to that point.

Added Figueiredo as his permanent signing has been announced, ive put him down as having a 5 year deal, because, despite him signing a 4 year contract, i'll tick everyones contract down a year in the summer anyway, i have put his date of signing as June, because thats when his Forest contract will start.

So as expected 30 under contract including senior loan returnees.

Take out the academy players the only other players who have had contract extensions at Forest will be Fox, Lichaj & Mancienne.

with the retained list released today ( https://www.nottinghamforest.co.uk/n...-list-2017-18/ ) ive removed Chris Cohen :*( Jack Hobbs, Dave Vaughan and Dejagah, oddly, there is no mentioned of Fuentes at all (unless ive gone blind) so im not sure whats going on with him, I THINK he only had a one year contract and assume its something to do with us taking on the cost of his treatment, but till i see official notice of his release, i'll leave him there for now

Why is Traore on the retained list? I thought Cardiff signed him on a free?

No , I think it might have been a cock up that they wanted him to but couldn't get it done so it had to be a loan.

I think I counted 29 first teamers on the retained list so there will have to be a hell of a clear out via loans/sales/paid-off contracts to enable more to come in to strengthen.

Busy time for the manager and staff and an interesting time for us armchairs experts and it all starts tomorrow. Well, perhaps not immediately, but the starters gun will go tomorrow morning and we have a few weeks before the World Cup, so expect a bit of movement.

You’re right, it’s a huge job. We are lumbered with long contracts for players who do not contribute and some who barely do and are past it. We’ve made some major mistakes in recruitment and contract negotiation over the last few years.

I dont think thats accurate or fair, of the 9 players who are on 3 or 4 year deals (Cash, Clough, McKay, Brereton, Darikwa, Walker, Figueiredo, Worrall and Lolley), none of them are over 26 and most are under 23, there are 4 who havent contributed under Karanka (Worrall because of Injuries mainly, Walker a prospect for the future) and only 2 of those look like they dont have a future unless they convince him during Pre-Season (Clough and McKay), I dont see a problem shifting either of those 2 unless they are on crazy wages

Even looking at the ones on 2 years (Bridcutt, Murphy, Osborn, Ariyibi, Bouchalakis, Cummings, Grant, Vellios, Smith, Edser, Yates, Guedioura, Watson), theres maybe another 5 (Murphy, Vellios, Cummings, Bouchalakis and Ariyibi) who havent contributed much under Karanka and again, unless they are on crazy wages, there shouldnt be THAT much trouble to shift (Ariyibi sounds likes hes going out on loan again though) apart from maybe Bouchalakis, who i can see getting released, the rest are either valuable squad members or youngsters

I’m talking about contracts for non-contributors. I’m certainly not talking about Worrall or Cash. I also am not including any who could be younger squad players. I am talking about specific guys I will list below. The ones we have for 1 more year: Ward, Evtimov, Lam, Henderson, Traore, Mancienne. 2 more years are: Vellios, Ariyibi, Cummings, Murphy, Bouch (I’m also hoping Pep can contribute but he may fall into this category as well). 3 more years: I have doubts about McKay’s motivation and whether Clough can ever contribute. I hope these 2 can get their shit together but Clough couldn’t get a game at Bolton. One and two year contracts might not seem long, but when the club carries that many on the wage bill, it is pissing away money. I hope you’re right and they won’t be trouble to shift.
