Default How does the current crop compare?

Do any of our current crop compare favorably to the 98 winning team?

    Beasant Vs Hamer
    Bonolair Vs Lichic
    Rogers Vs Fox
    Hjeilde Vs Hobbs
    Cooper Vs Mancienne
    Stone Vs Antonio
    Woan Vs Burke
    Gemmil Vs Lansbury
    Johnson Vs Osborn
    Van Hooijdonk Vs Walker
    Campbell Vs Ward

For me there are two draws and two wins for this year's team

    Draws Hobbs and Antonio
    Wins Lansbury and Osborn

Not particularly close amigo, and that's before you add Bart-Williams

Was going to include Bart Williams but that would mean another defeat for the current crop and I needed to have some optimism

Fair enough It's no bad reflection on the current bunch. The 97/98 squad was just awesome for a second division team

That 98 team was really good, plus they had a exceptional manager also, so far I haven't seen enough of df to say he's "exceptional" but I have to say, the off season work he's done regarding ffp has been brilliant

All our current crop are markedly worse.

Whilst I like Antonio, he isn't the same class as Stone. Stone was an England international at a time when England wern't utter dogshit

Seems a lifetime ago. What that team had was 2 cracking wide men - Stone & Woan and 2 prolific strikers who worked together. Our defence, with the exception of Cooper, wasn't particularly good. Beasant was steady but both fullbacks were average. Osborn is already better than Johnson. Lansbury, when he'sat this best is better than Gemmill. Stone & Woan were 2 of our best ever wide men. Stone should have had loads of England caps rather than Anderson whoVenables preferred.

Wasn't Bart-Williams playing left wing that season?

Stone and Woan from 94-96 over Burke and Antonio I think surely, but like I say Woan wouldn't be a first choice for 97/98 would he and perhaps Antonio from 14/15 is in a different way a similar asset to Stone from 97/98? (although he was still probably pretty much the same player in terms of attributes I think wasn't he despite fitness and missing open goal issues!).

Think of Gemmill lobbing the England keeper against Arsenal, his two goals at Wembley against Southampton, or his two against Leicester in 1994....just five moments off the top of my head that show you the ability Gemmill had. Then you have Lansbury... doing 115mph in his Bentley.

This is a good opportunity to bump this thread...

Although it should maybe be Stone vs Burke, and Bart-Williams vs Antonio?

I'd also pick prime Scot Gemmill over Lansbury I think. Maybe 13/14 Lansbury over 97/98 Scot Gemmill (not sure - Gemmill was still pretty good as a passer that season I think wasn't he and Geoff Thomas could be thrown in as alternative to him or Andy Johnson too I guess)?

None of the current crop can lay claims to being as good as the 97/98 team. Most of them are already old enough to know they will never get close. And the one or two that have the potential haven't really achieved anything yet. If you haven't got this as 11-0 to the 1998 then you're possibly guilty of applying the same logic to this that has seemed the scourge of recent Forest squads - that somehow a midtable second division player on a fat wage has already made it.

Looking again, if you pause this at 0:42 you can see that there was an unexpected bobble on that Steve Stone miss!

Anyway, I think it should be Stone over Burke. If Cohen got back to his best and fully fit and played left back maybe him and Osborn (vs either Thomas or Johnson) are the best calls for parity or better (especially if Osborn continues to improve)?

None of today's players get in the 97/98 team.

No way that Lansbury is a better player than Gemmill. He did used to get his hair cut in Derby though, hoppers opposite Limeys. A much underrated forest player in my opinion. I liked Geoff Thomas too, can remember his goal against arsenal when we got promoted and Darcheville gave Keown the runaround. I watched it in a pub in Newquay where Bernard Manning was resident comedian for the summer season.

Aye, similar to Raddy some fans didn't recognise what Gemmill contributed because you couldn't stat it.

Would love a Thomas in the side now. McKenna, Gardner, Moussi etc. I ain't saying MM can't do a job or grow into the role, but a Thomas type would go a long way to balancing the side as a whole.

Agreed. An old reliable David Phillips head would be decent too.

A very underrated player for us. Made us tick at times.

Lansbury better than Gemmill? Young Scot had probably clocked about 100 top flight appearances by the time he was Lansburys age! It's not even close

Gemmill was three times the player Lansbury is.

He also scored some absolute beauties. Agree on him being underrated. We probably got him just as he was past his prime but I recall him being awesome in that home game against man utd. Unselfish, intelligent and tidy.

Gemmill is a far superior option to Lansbury, sorry. Gemmill actually gave a shit about playing football for our club.
