    Default 23 years and counting...

Just a bit of food for thought. Talk of Norwich getting to Wembley yesterday for the first time since 1985 got me thinking: it is now 23 years since Forest made an appearance in a final of any description (the 92 League Cup final if anyone is scratching their heads). In that time every single professional team in the East Midlands has been to either Wembley or Cardiff at least once (for our sheepy friends that is 3 times and for Leicester that is 5!). The only side in the top two divisions that have waited even longer than us to appear in a final (be it cup or play off) is Fulham. For a club of our stature that is absolutely woeful.

I'm 26 years old. I have been going to matches since 1994 and have a season ticket holder since 2000 and I have not seen us play at Wembley before. Given that the average age of match attending fan is, at a guess, around 30 odd, I should imagine that there are an awful lot of people like me.

    That is dreadful.

I was in London last week and parked up at Canon's park to get a replacement bus service because the Jubilee Line was shut. The bus went right past Wembley which was hosting the FA Vase final between North Shields and Glossop North End and by god it looked like good fun, even with only 15k fans milling about. Scenes yesterday of Grimsby fans taking over Trafalgar Square before the game make me incredibly envious. I'm even jealous of clubs like Sheffield United who, despite having a woeful record in finals and have played a division below us for the past 4 years, at least have a lot of incredible memories of finals and semi-finals to ignite support.

I know that this is a bit of an incoherent rant but I can't help but think that if watching Forest is to get exciting again, a day out en masse with 40-50k fellow reds really wouldn't go amiss! I think if any club's fans deserve it then it's us and if Fawaz really wants to pander to us then he would put significant pressure on whoever is manager this week to take the cups more seriously!

Thought Fulham reached a Europa cup final recently.

This is what nearly two decades of off-field mismanagement gets you.

„I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

I agree we need to take the Cups more seriously.
Times have changed but I'm from that bygone era, so it baffles me that we almost dismiss these competitions.

I went to the Everton, Oldham, Spurs, Luton and Man Utd Cup Finals and they are priceless memories. Everything about it, the anticipation days before, the sleepless night, the travelling down, the beer and song, the game...

It's tragic that almost a generation haven't experienced it, especially for a club our size.

What has been our highlight in the last 15 or so years? Losing at Bramall Lane in a play-off semi final?

    Come on Forest, FFS.

In the last 15 years? I can think of May 2008 against Yeovil Town - "...and...CHELTENHAM HAVE SCORED!!" and also stuffing moneybags Manchester City in the FA Cup in their own ground, 3-0.

What exactly do you mean by "a club of our stature" ?

By our size, we are a championship club. We will in 20k-24k regularly, just like most others in the division.

We arent entitled to anything more than we have. Sadly, the overachievements of yesteryear are an added burden to us that others dont have.

Yes, its disappointing we havent been to Wembley in recent times. Im glad we havent, as that meant that Calderwood got us out of League 1 automatically without the lottery of a Wembley final.

Having seen all of the Wembley finals of the 80s / early 90s, I can tell you its a long way back when you lose!

Last day out watching forest at wembley was v Man U..... What a wank day that was, surrounded by their fans, them giving it the big one when they scored, then seeing them getting smashed up at half time for not being clever enough to understand the first rule of sitting with the opposite fans....as B block says its a horrible place to come back from beaten......shouldnt have been placed where it was, wouldnt have cost half as much if it would have been built in brum.

I just think we used up all our luck in the 1970s and early 1980s. We've got to spend a lifetime paying for climbing way above our station.

It's not all about winning trophies, though. We've had plenty of little things to enjoy along the way, haven't we?
Like SVC, the various wins over Derby, and we've had a lot of hope of success, even if it's always blown up in our faces.

This defeatist attitude pisses me off. We aren't like any other club. This is OUR club, not fucking Norwich or whoever else. We pull in the crows in spite of our mediocrity

We are a big bastard club and we as a fan base deserve some good times.

Unfortunately we have been, and will continue to be until things change, a mismanaged football club.

Yet our fans will still be there week in week out putting every other fucking club to shame.

How thin is that straw that you're clutching at there? Can it hold two of us?

I'm not insinuating that we are entitled to anything. We aren't a big PL obviously, but the point is that there are plenty of sides who have historically had far smaller average attendances and fewer resources than us who have experienced far more than us and it is shameful.

PS Apologies, I could/should have responded to all of those points in one post.

"23 of abject mediocrity (with the exception of 94/95 and 97/9 never stopped us moaning!"

I look forward to downloading it.

If the club can't even be arsed to put in a decent effort in ties against the likes of Rochdale and Chester, then its no surprise that trips to Wembley are a dim and distant memory.

On the subject of a club of our stature... there was recently a question on the football league banter page; who is the sleeping giant outside the Premiership. Us and Leeds came out top. Quite good considering how little we have achieved for so long.

Things have to change soon, we are beginning to defy the law of averages.

My best chances of getting to Wembley to watch Forest were cocked up by 2 Scots, the other well i'm never going to blame Frank Clark. But Calderwood in 2007 and that Poisoned Glaswegian dwarf at Sheffield United last season. The Other time was in 1996 when i thought no one would beat Mark Crossley after his invincible heroics at White Hart Lane in the FA Cup 5th Round. Only for Franz Carr to do us in the 6th round for Aston Villa.

Norwich had still been to the Millennium Stadium for a play-off final too 13 years ago too.
