    Diving won't stop.

Maybe diving with no contact won't work so well. The attacker throwing themselves in the air, dangling a leg and brushing the defending mid-air will win more penalties than before. Watching slow motion replays under pressure to make a call while the stadium waits, the focus is on whether there is any contact at all, not whether it had anything to do with the attacker ending up on the floor.

And if there is contact, but the ref feels it was all initiated by the diving attacker, how do they communicate that? Everybody will see the contact on the replay and expect a penalty is coming, as seems the general response to such incidents starting with commentators and pundits currently... "Oohh there WAS contact....penalty for me"

If the ref then says no penalty the referee knows there will be bedlam and has no way explaining. If they book the attacker, he's getting death threats all week.

Teams will work out what gets given in the spur of the moment, and what doesn't, and form tactics specifically to win VAR penalties. Same as aiming at the defender's arm from two yards.

Until FIFA decide they want to get rid of diving, VAR stop any of it.

Also been one in the WC that I can remember.

The only team that ever looks like they want to play, are hosts that wants one more match to wave to their own supporters before its football party is over.

I predict that fans of PL clubs will be complaining about VAR a lot next season, while fans of Championship clubs will be complaining about not having VAR a lot next season.

Which is good. Because one thing we don't want VAR to do is stop the complaints.

They said it would and that was the worry. We need our complaints...in the crowd, on the internet, down the pub with our bags of pork scratchings. It's the game's lifeblood.

That was always one of my reasons for not wanting it. Until rugby league introduced it and stuff was still getting interpreted wrongly but taking 5 minutes to get it wrong

Football has always been so great because it is such an open sport dependant on many outside influences (weather, pitch, refereeing decisions, crowd interaction etc.). The big clubs want it as closed as possible because the more closed the game is the more chance of the better team winning. Hopefully the VAR won’t give them what they want like they thought it would.

Arsenal winning the legal case to get Eduardo's ban annulled irreparably set back the fight against diving. Everyone knows that unless its 100% clear cut the 'simulator' has the advantage.

Diving is a low risk/high reward tactic, so it isn't going to go away any time soon. VAR or no VAR.

Sad to say, but I probably won't watch another woman's match this season.

    It's the summer of Neville.

Meanwhile, four people are still watching Sky still, so Gary will still pop up occasionally.

No doubt basketball and netball (bit like rounders/baseball, rugby/gridiron isn't it? Yanks can't invent their own games) are very skilful games and good to play in, but why are such boring games so popular?
