    Default Sexism in Football

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/31750397

Lots in the news yesterday about incidents where match officials, physios, St John's Ambulance, catering staff etc walking round the pitch etc have been subjected to sexist chants and abuse.

I will admit doing it myself when a lot younger, Lee Chapman's introduction under Clough when Leslie Ash walked on springs to mind, but I cringe when I look back on that and I wouldn't do it now I am a proper grown up.

Are we bad as fans of this Club? Do you think it's as bad as it used to be generally? Do they just need to woman up and get 'em out because they are obviously gagging for it by simply turning up to football?

Women should be able to attend football matches, either as spectators or in a working capacity as part of their jobs, without being subjected to vocal abuse.

The clip that's going round of Man. United "fans" abusing Chelsea's physio Eva Graneiro is disgusting.

There's no place for it in the modern game.

It's not "banter". It's just offensive abuse.

„I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

Is that the same Man Utd that said they hadn't heard any abuse and that claims Johnny Evans didn't gob at Cisse?

Graneiro is an attractive woman, but that shouldn't preclude her from working for a living. The crap she gets is ridiculous.

Things said and chanted at football go unchallenged, that wouldn't be accepted in most surroundings. At every ground. It's not everybody, but enough to be heard. Because of that football crowds are a bit backwards. Even compared to crowds at other sports.

The West Ham fans video making fun of Chelsea fans in Paris missed the point. Within a week West Ham had been in news for anti-semitic chanting, and chants that make fun of people with learning disabilities. The tribalism in football means that when you get stories like that fans can see it as an attack on their club, when really it is a point about football in general. So there is more hate towards the person who brought attention to it.

It's awful and typical of the "banter brigade". "Tits, fanny and forest" is offensive and sexist too but at least it's not abuse directed squarely at one individual

Don't ever get talked into getting a cheap Windows phone if you want all your paragraphs to appear in the same hemisphere.

isn't that just a clumsy reference to the myth that there are more woman than men in Nottingham?

That chant will be challenged and go at some stage.

I doubt it. In the past I have heard fans of other teams sing it (substituting there town for Nottingham obviously).

That said, I have no idea if it originated with Forest all those years ago.

I always thought so, I don't recall anyone singing it before us.

Yes I imagine it's a reference to the myth of 4 women to every man in Nottingham

Why is it offensive and sexist? It's a compliment!

My wife joins in with it but then she is a proper football fan who knows exactly what to expect at football and has no desire to see the experience sterilised.

This is one of the many reasons that I am so so glad I don't fork over £400 for a season ticket this year

Next it will be you can't sing anything horrible or nasty about the other team. Soon it will be the only permitted 'chants' inside football grounds will be You'll Never Walk Alone or Pig Bag.

Sterilised shite for the masses who take offence to pretty much anything. Go watch the egg chasers, who allow drinking at your seats and mingling fans if you want a sterlised environment.

I think the game has come a long way with stuff like this and that article is yet another angle of complaint from the PC brigade. FFS, the constant complaining about the most benign things at Football is getting really tiresome.

There are loads of women of all ages attending matches these days and I don't think Forest are particularly sexist with their chanting at all. Other than the Vicky Pollard chant I don't recall anything in years.

I will be going to watch an all female match pretty soon, see what songs they chant there and enjoy the final whistle

Maybe Forest can introduce a special area for people who only come to football so they can be sexist yobs. Costs an extra £100 for a season ticket but you can be as boorish as you want. 'The Lout Stand, proudly sponsored by Acme Penis Enlarger'...

Come on Alex it's not quite like that, is it. Nobody wants to hear constant direct abuse to any individual during a game but this covers wolf whistling and the odd isolated chant.
It happens in society everyday and yes it is boring, but christ, is it really that big a problem at football.

Football has got much bigger problems imo and tedious stuff like this is just a diversion.
