    Default Dave Mackay passes away

Didn't know too much about him as way before my time, but know he was manager here. Very popular man elsewhere in football.

    RIP

    Sad news . RIP.

If he hadn't left us and taken over at Derby - Clough may never have made his way to his true home at Forest.

I'm betting it was a fucking good offer from Longson as well - who else would those lads have played for except one of their own? I wonder what the reaction was here, at the time. Perhaps it was one of the things which brought the current-day enmity into being?

I'm really sorry to hear of this - he was a great player of his time, a Peter Taylor player in his later years, reborn under the great pair. He probably learned a thing or two about management from them, as when he went to Derby he finished the job and won the league, not easy to take over a successful team. His achievements and longevity are all you need to know, they speak for themselves.

I should hope the club will at least acknowledge his passing. Anyone associated with the club deserves a write-up.

    Very sad news.

He used to have a tie shop on Green Lanes round the corner from where I live until he moved it to the other side of Enfield.

Always used to make me laugh when I passed the shop as I remembered the refrain "I'm Dave Mackay me!" as a kind of boast by my predominantly Scottish male family members as being hard as nails.

A lot of Spurs fans down here will be gutted.

    RIP Mr Mackay.

Someone with ties to both clubs, who ought to be honoured, without favour or rancour.

An old school player who made his mark on several clubs.

    Thoughts with his family. R.I.P.

He used to drink in the Keys in Burton Joyce when I worked there. Lovely bloke.
Hilarious when him and Jimmy Sirrell used to start talking about the old days.

You listen to the obits on the radio and you'd have no idea he managed us at one time, or that (I'm reliably informed) he died in Nottingham.

By "relegation battle", do you mean 7th, 12th or 14th?

    Very sad news.

My dad informs we that he was a fantastic player. And he doesn't use that term lightly.

    RIP Dave Mackay.

Brilliant photo. Those guys clearly weren't athletes back then, Bremner looks like a proper rationing child whereas 'el Tel' doesn't look in the best of shape. Compare them to the 'hard men' of today, Savage, Barton, Mills etc etc. They'd have got a right kick in.

    Billy Bremner.
One of sports most iconic photographs.
Bremner was always a nasty wee Scot who thought he was hard as nails.
Bremner had just committed a nasty foul on Cliff Jones - Spurs' flying winger.
MacKay demonstrated that Bremner was not as hard as he thought himself.
I played for a short while at Dave MacKay's squash club that used to be at the top of Arnold Lane/corner of Gedling Road.
I suppose that has long gone?

One of the real characters of football. Funny how you look up to successful people and he was only 7 years older than me!

He was just starting to turn the club around after relegation under Matt Gillies when Derby came calling for him.

Mackay's most obviously legacy was his signing of Ian Bowyer from Leyton Orient.

You must have been too young... massive sign in great big letters used to be on that corner "Dave MacKay's Squash and Fitness Centre".
Saw him in there a couple of time - never really met him, and I don't think my level of squash would have made me a worthy opponent!

Bloody Sheep, stealing our managers who go on to bring them success.

MacKay taught Nigel how to shoot according to Brian Clough's autobiographies.

A proper footballer in his day. RIP.

Think it was just Mapperley Plains Squash Club by then!
