    Default "Season ded"

We need to finish on 75 points to be almost certain of finishing 6th and getting into the playoffs.

That means we need 41/54 points from 18 games.

That means we need to win 12 from 18. Then we still need to draw 5 of the remaining games, allowing us to lose 1.

Dougie Freedman needs to achieve a 66% win ratio home and away to get us into the playoffs.

We're out of all the cup competitions.

Is the season still alive? Can it be done?

Let's just concentrate on getting the points needed to avoid relegation first.

You never see a mid-table permutations thread.

It can be done. It likely won't.

To get 70 points we'd have to win every home game & draw every away one. Thats league winning form which over a season would net you 92pts.

It can be done though. Even a draw at Brighton wouod fit in with that. The odd win away compensating for dropped points at home & away. Who knows, but Freedman would have worked a minor miracle if we end up in the playoffs.

Let's hope we benefit from a new manager bounce and give is the best chance and hopefully momentum will carry us.

    It is definitely possible though.

Let's just keep sacking managers after the 'new manager bounce' ends, we'll be in twiffic form then.

It's football. If you don't believe anything can happen then it's not the sport for you.

When Freedman took over at Palace they were in the relegation zone and he led them to a 17th place finish. The following season he had them in 4th place I think before he left to join Bolton.

Bolton were also not doing too good when he took over but he almost led them to a playoff position, only missing out on the final day, which nobody expected.

So he has history of joining a club and instantly turning it around for the better. Let's see what happens....

I'm going to be slightly more optimistic and say 70 points. Maybe that'll be enough?

EDIT: In fact I can see us setting up for a draw against Bournemouth and getting one, so that's 71 points for me. And by the time we play Ipswich we could be an entirely different prospect from the one we are now, so predicting a defeat by them at this stage is daft, really.

Ultimately it all boils down to the next four games, all of which are against beatable opposition. It's entirely possible that we could string four wins together, which would put us very close to the top six with plenty of points still to play for. One game at a time, folks.

I posted this the other day - a run which would see us finish on 74.

    Millwall H - WIN
    Brighton A - WIN
    Wigan H - WIN
    Blackpool A - WIN
    Bolton H - WIN
    Bournemouth H - DRAW
    Reading A - WIN
    Charlton A - WIN
    Middlesbrough H - DRAW
    Leeds A - WIN
    Rotherham H - WIN
    Norwich A - LOSE
    Wolves H - DRAW
    Brentford A - LOSE
    Huddersfield H - WIN
    Watford H - DRAW
    Blackburn A - WIN
    Ipswich A - LOSE
    Cardiff H - WIN

Obviously that would now need to be adapted to:

    Brighton A - WIN
    Wigan H - WIN
    Blackpool A - WIN
    Bolton H - WIN
    Bournemouth H - DRAW
    Reading A - WIN
    Charlton A - WIN
    Middlesbrough H - DRAW
    Leeds A - WIN
    Rotherham H - WIN
    Norwich A - LOSE
    Wolves H - DRAW
    Brentford A - WIN
    Huddersfield H - WIN
    Watford H - DRAW
    Blackburn A - WIN
    Ipswich A - LOSE
    Cardiff H - WIN

    It's on!

A few wins in the next few games and the season will be dead, losses and its alive with the threat of relegation.

In the last five seasons a team could have made the play-offs with this number of points and superior goal difference to 7th:

    71
    68
    70
    72
    69

In the last five seasons a team could have made been relegated with this number of points and inferior goal difference to the team in 21st:

    44
    55
    48
    48
    49

We're on 34 points with 18 games left. It's fun to permutate. Permutate away.

Dead as a dodo. The sooner people get a charge for the play offs out of their mind the more comfortable the end of the season will be. Freedman needs to focus on getting things right on the pitch to enable us a chance to progress next year. Even then that progression might not mean the play offs or automatic promotion. We really are playing catch up as a club which pearce was trying to tackle. Fawaz has in effect wiped the slate clean and put as back to square one in may aspects.

I think anyone present at the Millwall game, who is still contemplating the play offs, has moved on from optimism & started to flirt with delusion.
