Maldini appointed Technical Director, Boban appointed Chief football officer and Giampaolo has reached an agreement with Samp to be released.

    That’s a very strong setup.

Zvonomir Boban, what a player he was! One of my personal favourites, the Croat was a superb Midfield playmaker and a delight to watch.

I will always remember him described in the dulcet tones of Peter Brackley on a Sunday „oh, a mercurial Pass from Boban there!“

I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

He led Empoli to a top half finish in Serie A, same with a Samp side with almost no recognisable names in it. Bar of course Quagliarella who at about 100 years old was capocannoniere this year beating Piatek and some bloke called Ronaldo (who btw scored the same amount of goals even though Piatek played most of the season at Genoa). Giampaolo plays 2 up top and a passing style that has been compared to that of Sarri.

All in all I'm pretty pleased with it. Infinitely preferable to spunking a small fortune on yesterdays man.

In all seriousness though, big Italian sides giving coaching opportunities to young(ish) Italian coaches can only be good for the game here.

I was just on the wind up mate haha. It is a good thing for Italian football and I think he will do reasonably well.

Let's face it, he has to be an upgrade on Rino. God knows how we got anywhere near the champions league with him in charge.

Serie A has some way to get back to what it once was but there seems like a new generation of coaches and players coming through that could compete with the best.

Just needs some genuine competition for Juve from Milan and the Rome based clubs.

My Viola was on its knees and still is even with the Della Valle brothers finally selling up after so many disappointing seasons after their successful period under Prandelli. Looks like the new owner is ambitious and Batistuta will be back as a director so lets see.

Eden Hazard apparently earning 66p a second at Real. Mental.

Hopefully both Inter and AC can actually challenge Juve this year. Not to be bias (who am I kidding, I am bias) but hopefully Conte can straighten the squad out and put up a real challenge with a few additions.

For Conte to go there, he is clearly expecting big things. Looks like he wants some Prem players.

Milan sniffing around some fella called Ozan Kabak and are apparently willing to stump up a 15m release clause.

Apparently his agent was at Casa Milan today.

    I knew this was coming.

Ozcan was Bundesliga rookie of the season, 18-years old, even though he only joined VfB Stuttgart in January this year for €11m from Galatasary.

Big, mobile, powerful Centre-Back, pacey and can pick a pass. He’s good in the air too, and chipped in with three goals in 15 matches for Die Schwaben.

Really enjoyed watching him play (did I ever mention, I like a Defender?) but resigned myself to him probably being snapped up when VfB went down. €15m is the release clause, so, let’s see.

He’d be a very good fit for Milan though.

The way things are going, I’m going to take my boots down to the Open training session on Thursday, I might get a game.

Sounds like there will be a fight for Kabak. You highlighted him Chris.

Bayern, Schalke, West Ham, Arsenal, Man Utd, Tottenham, Milan all linked.

Release clause only 15m after signing him for 11m. Its perfect for the big clubs. Only 4m more after he sort of proved himself.

VfB have already sold Benjamin Pavard for €33m to Bayern and now it looks like Ozcan Kabak will be off for €15m; not a bad bit of business for the Club, as they seek a complete rebuild of the playing staff.

I’ve previously mentioned Club Captain Christian Genter and Defender Andreas Beck not having their contracts extended; now, Midfielder Dennis Aogo and Goalie Ron-Robert Zieler have also left.

There’s also rumours about the Club cutting its losses on €7m flop Pablo Maffeo, forward Nicolás Gonzalez, Defender Borna Susa and a couple of others. It will be a completely new-look VfB that takes the Field in the DFB-Cup against Hansa Rostock in August (the season starts with the first round of the Cup).

I wasn’t kidding about taking my boots on Thursday!

    Aah I see.

Liked that Aogo when he was a kid too. He can play all over the place can’t he?

I’m wondering how the fuck they actually got relegated tbh. The basis of a very good team in those names you mentioned

I read Zieler went to Hannover over the weekend to have his medical and popped into the Phil Collins concert before singing 'Take me home' being a former Hannover player & massive Phil Collins fan.

Aogo can play in either full back position, DM or either wing. Useful player and I’d have kept him.

But then, I’m not Thomas „Der Hammer“ Hitzlsperger!

For the „how they got relegated“ it’s mainly two things:

First, poor recruitment in the summer. Pablo Maffeo (€7m!) and Borna Sosa at full back were both frankly rubbish, Gonzalo Castro and Daniel Didavi in Midfield spent more time injured than playing and the Club failed to recruit goalscorers to back up ageing Mario Gomez.

Second, they were far too hasty in dismissing Tayfun Korkut as Manager. Korkut, who had taken over in January from the popular Hannes Wolf (who’d gotten VfB promoted at the end of the 16/17 season) masterminded a remarkable surge in the Post-Winter-Break part of the season, which saw Stuttgart storm up the table to finish seventh, second in the form table behind only champions FC Bayern. They only missed out on European football because Eintracht Frankfurt improbably beat the Bavarians in the Cup Final, 3-1, and thus claimed the Europa League place.

Korkut had no say in recruitment, Sporting Director Michael Reschke bringing in an assortment of players (as above) most of whom turned out to be a bit rubbish.

After some poor early games, including losing in the first round of the Cup, VfB sacked Korkutt at the start of October and appointed former Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl.

To say his tenure was frankly a disaster is putting it mildly. The Club won only one of the games in which he took charge, and the matches saw some bizarre team selections and formations, often in the same match, as the coach seemingly struggled to find something that would work. Korkut‘s previous compact 4-4-2 was sidelined for various formations that saw three, four, five and, on one bizarre occasion, six defenders deployed. It did not stop the concession of goals, with Die Schwaben regularly shipping two or three goals a game, and struggling at the other end - Mario Gomez managed only seven goals, and €5,5m signing Nicolás González just two.

Reschke paid with his job in January and Hitzlsperger came in, and whilst the fans clamoured for a change of Manager, somehow Weinzierl kept his job, presiding over another series of hapless displays, until Stuttgart imploded 6-0 Away at Augsburg on Matchday 30 in April; Hitzlsperger, furious, sacked Weinzierl before the team had even got on the bus.

Youth Coach Nico Willig got the interim job, but despite losing only once in six matches and winning two, the two draws against Union Berlin in the Relegation-Play-off condemned the Dunkelroter to the 2. Bundesliga for next season.

However, Hitzlsperger has brought in former Arsenal Director of Football Sven Minitsalat to fill the same role at VfB, with particular responsibilities for player recruitment, and the Club have set about (brutally) culling the squad.

Will it be enough, well, who knows? VfB will be clearly among the favourites to go up, but then so were Hamburger SV last year...

Mats Hummels will rejoin Borussia Dortmund from FC Bayern.

That’s a good signing for Die Schwarzgelb, the central Defender is still only 30.

VfB have signed goalie Fabian Bredlow from 1.FC Nürnberg:

The 24-year old joins on a three-year deal.

In other VfB news, the Club have finally gotten rid of €7m flop sold Pablo Maffeo to FC Girona in Spain.
