Thread: SKYBET CHAMPIONSHIP

I long for us to find someone like Romaine Sawyers.

Not only is he quality and simplicity personified on the ball and in tight spaces. He's just constantly moving, directing traffic. Dictates the game even when he's not on the ball.

My biggest issue with us (aside from a huge lack of space) is our poor movement. We're always doing things in 1/2's. Players don't drop in and out of spaces to then make space for themselves or others. Really frustrating. There's times when we're on the ball it looks like when we're under pressure, some don't actually want the ball, and hide behind opposition players to cut the pass off. Or times when Samba claims the ball and wants to distribute quickly, and players move away with their backs to him. Really grinds my gears.

Sawyers is a quality player and one of the best in the division for me. A player like him would improve us no end.

After a great start, Preston are dropping like a stone and have just lost 4 in a row (including getting battered 4-0 by Hull). Leeds should be able to beat them.

Birmingham are bang average, so another Leeds win there is quite likely.

So that leaves West Brom, who are the best side in the league. Leeds will probably lose that one, but it'll hardly be a disaster for them as they will likely still be miles ahead of whoever is 3rd at that point.

I don't see anyone catching them, and if someone does then it won't be us.
Some fair points, you could be right. But to me it's not about each game in isolation, it's about playing all those sides in such a short space of time.

All of those sides are competitive, and I think Leeds will feel it.

I'd watch those 4 games, but then also watch the impact it has on Jan + Feb too.

West Brom have looked a class above everyone else today. Great to watch too.

Their squad is ridiculous for this level.

Edwards off the bench is a talent too.

I hope we start giving Alex Mighten similar opportunity. Disappointed Johnson sees less time on the bench too.

Given how poor our attacking options have been, I doubt Mighten or Johnson would have done any worse.

    WBA are a class above.

Only team we can't catch. If the suits up top have got their act together for a change in Jan, we'll have 'em.

1st might not be there for the taking, but 2nd is. And our time is about due.

    Those parachute payments really help

Fair play to West Brom. They lost about 50 goals in Gayle, Rodriguez and Harvey Barnes leaving.

You make it sound so easy. 10 or so of our competitors have vastly superior resources to us, and the rest all have the same ambition as we do.

2nd is hardly there for the taking, and not finishing in the top 2 is not going to be a failure from the owners. It would be a monumental achievement if we did it, not par for the course, which your logic seems to be suggesting.

Really? Vastly? I thought we'd a rich benefactor? Who spent the most on a single player pre season?

Agree it's no way easy and as I've said I don't think we'll finish anywhere near the PO's (still hope obviously). We've got injuries and suspensions to deal with yet and I've seen plenty of teams that's about equal with us in terms of team ability, even some at the bottom.

I'm not sure we'd have spent the most on a single player this pre-season? Looking at our transfer business, we probably broke even, or even sold more than we bought.

    .
Financial Fair Play means we cant spend as much as those other clubs.

WBA have received nearly three times as much income as us this season.

Last season was the only time in the last 5 seasons that we actually spent more on transfer fees than what we sold. Compared to many other clubs in this division, what we've spent is quite modest. Though we don't have parachute payments and make barely money outside of match days (which is why updating the City Ground so that it has modern facilities to make that extra money is so important), so it's always going to be a fine balancing act between spending enough to remain competitive without breaching FFP rules.

West Brom's wage bill is about three times more than ours too.

Being able to spend a huge amount on players like that makes a big difference.

Good argument for WBA, not sure about any others.

FFP? Do clubs take any notice of it? They just seem to come up with accounting loopholes like selling their stadia to overcome it?

I seem to remember that during Cloughie's time here, they restructured the set up so that no one sugar daddy could take over the club. Fat lot of good that did.

But the same idea from the EFL (FFP) seems to have worked a treat. No matter how rich your owner or benefactor, you are stuck with a spending cap whilst the parachute clubs can blitz the market.

So our sugar daddy is impotent (not literally) and has to take out his frustrations by spending his vast wealth on the infrastructure.

There's a team in this league who bought one of our own players off us for £15m.

Even Blackburn paid £7m+ for Brereton.

Derby have agreed a deal to sign England's top ever goal scorer on an alleged 100k p/w. They've just spent £10m on Bielik.

Fulham probably have the most expensively assembled squad in the league. Their front 3 is Mitrovic, Cavaleiro and Knockaert. Just the £20m on Alfie Mawson at CB. Their squad's wages must be mental.

Stoke must have one of the top 2/3 expensive squads in fees and wages.

Bristol City admittedly brought in some funds with the sales of their LB and Webster. But they've spent massively aswell, including loans such as Afobe who will comfortably be on 50k p/w or so. 7

Reading's two strikers this summer cost them an alleged 10m+ future fees combined.

Sheff Weds/Leeds/Cardiff/Huddersfield will all have big wage budgets

There are teams who have far for expenses that we do. Having a wealthy owner doesn't mean they bankroll you. Because that's business suicide.

This league isn't a level playing field at all.

Alot of that goes straight over me head son

Avbin stuck in a wetherspoons since 1982 so all I can ascertain from that is we're worse off than most, so we're punching above our weight atm? If it's all down to money as Ravz alludes to then my assumption we'll finish 13th will be about right.

As for business suicide, the last time I looked nearly every club in the entire football league was gazillions in debt?

    I just believe Zeus.

It will be the failing of the owners if we don't. It's been blindingly obvious we've needed a deeper strike force, a winger & some pace for several transfer windows now. They've failed to address that.

Now here's a chance to finally get it right. We've handicapped ourselves by not having those options here already, but we can still get topside of it.

If we don't, we don't & should be build for next year. But I won't be looking at the manager, I'll be looking at whoever thought starting the season with 1 proven striker & Ameobi & Adomah as our only left-wide options was good enough for promotion. Must do better, here's the chance to do it.

No one's said it's easy. But going up isn't easy. You don't get promoted by only doing the easy things. At some point the club is going to have to go above & beyond what we're used to. Now is the perfect opportunity to do that.
