Aye, it was so much better when the ball could hardly be passed smoothly over the bog of a pitch and the fans murdered each other in the stands.

The point was the money in the PL is creating a discrepancy between PL clubs and promoted championship clubs and the knock on effect is the parachute payment creating a discrepancy between relegated clubs and championship clubs that don't have parachute payments.

I don't think the improvement of pitches and reduction in football violence is directly related to the money being dished out to PL clubs and the vultures that circle it.

Curiously things like muddy pitches, drunken drivers, smoking etc seem to have been eliminated or curtailed over the years, but we're no happier.

It's not only the improvement in infrastructure and the change in rules which matters as much as the way people feel about life. Rules etc (including parachute payments) are all very well, but can become oppressive and restricting.

Parachute payments (or rewards for failure) are anathema, second only to the corrupt player loan system.
The Premier League owners didn't get the 2/3rds majority required to pass a motion to stop relegation from the Prem, making it the preserve of the 20 teams at the time.
By having Failure Payments I think the expectation was that the relegated clubs would go straight back to the top flight.
As for the loan system - it is killing football and stifling talent.
Both the Failure Payment system and the Loan system should be binned.
Binning the former would take some of the heat out of inflated transfer fees and sky-rocket wages, and get clubs to actually manage their organisation in a sustainable and businesslike way..
Binning the latter would see young, talented players join clubs who needed them, rather than being hoovered up by the "big clubs" who then lend them out on a grace and favour basis.
Binning both may well help save football as we knew it.

Parachute payments wouldnt be so much of a problem if we weren't trapped in the prison of FFP regulations.

I'd really prefer if the Sheep go for Monk instead of Hughton.

Neither, Tony Pulis is the man they need.

    I'd love that.

Pulis is ineffective without all 6 foot plus players.

Either Pulis or Cotterill is fine with me, as both would result in Derby fans having to watch the likes of Keogh launching the ball at Waghorn's head for 90 minutes every week.

    In other news....

The Championship play-off final is often touted as the richest game in football, worth an estimated £170m to the winning team.*
Ahead of their victory this year, Aston Villa offered one of their best loved legends, European Cup winner Gordon Cowans, a ticket to Wembley to watch the match - as a thank you for all his efforts for the club back in the day.
And all they asked for in return...? £70.
Cowans ended up watching it in the Horse & Jockey in Lichfield instead.

Linday and Davies are decent players from Barnsley.

Followed a lot of Barnsley last season, I am surprised how easily they let both of those players go. Definitely a club to watch in terms of poaching their players, especially if they are going to sell at the first signs of cash.

They are properly sticking to their way of doing things, replaced those two with Brad Collins from Chelsea & Mads Andersen from Denmark. Still the most senior player is Dani Pinillos at 26.

It's too easy buying these cheap, young, enthusiastic players. Be like Forest and grind on through endless negotiations to buy has-beens or biscuits.

Stoke's issue is trying to get players out. Hence they've had to be 'smart' with free transfers.

They've told Berahino they've cancelled his contract due to his behaviour.

They want to get Moritz Bauer, Erik Pieters, Kevin Wimmer, Geoff Cameron, Badou Ndiaye, Giannelli Imbula, Mame Biram Diouf & amazingly Ryan Woods out. Those first 7 are on Prem wages.

They also expect Jack Butland , Joe Allen & Bruno Martins Indi to get bids for them.

Charlton only have 12 first team players. Their loans have gone back + Aribo (Rangers), Bauer (Preston) & Fosu (Oxford) have left.

Where the hell to? The MLS?

I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

Doing a Premier League for the 2nd tier are we ?

Future prospects for the 3rd/4th tier football ? Then you consider top clubs wanting B teams in the league.

I'm interested how they mention 24 clubs. There is always a 12 team switch. So are we talking at this point and including your Luton's etc

It’s been brewing for a while. This from last November:

A PL2, I’m pretty sure, would significantly harm the Football League, because not only would it pull more and more wealth upward, it potentially would kill the League Cup too.

As ever, it just seems to be an argument about money.
