    Default 3-5-2

Having seen the Netherlands destroy Spain tonight playing 3-5-2 does anyone think we should try it? I definitely think we have the players for it.

    -------------Darlow--------------

    -----Lascelles-Hobbs-Wilson------

    -Lichaj---------------------Cohen-

    ----------Vaughan--Lansbury-------

    -----------------Reid-------------

    -----Paterson-----------Fryatt----

Hull have got out of this division playing it so it can be done

No, stick with a back four. I don't see the need to mess with the back four

Do actually like the look of that but obviously Veldwijk has been bought to play eventually anyway with Fryatt and then you can't accommodate all of Pato, Lansbury, Vaughan and Reid, and wouldn't want to leave any of them out so it's tricky. I think we'll be going 442.

Disappointed. I thought for a minute you were announcing a new game show for Ted Rogers.

442 would mean Reid on the wing I prefer him now behind the striker(s)

If one of our CB's get injured we're in trouble. Obviously we can change formation if this happens but it's increasing the risk. I think Psycho might try it. We just have such a strong midfield that I think we should put as many there was we can, 5. Don't know who else we're going to sign yet

It does look tidy though, just not playing Pato to his strength on the wing

You'd play Paterson in the role Robben played tonight, so bit really an out and out striker

For me I'd play 442 in a diamond like we did under Hart. Pato just being the front 2 LANs and Reid behind him then Vaughn sweeping up behind them

Pearce has talked about 3-5-2 in the past. In relation to England I Think

Yes definitely. Said it another thread.
Strength at the back, width and freedom to attack. All three at the back are comfortable with the ball which helps. I think it would work to reduce goals conceded and allow greater attacking intent.

Really don't like the diamond. No width. When Davies played it we looked too narrow.

3-5-2 is too risky if the opponent isn't playing the same formation.

100% yes. Said this on another thread. At the back I think Lascelles would flourish alongside Hobson. Cohen can show both sides of his game up and down the left. Vaughan protects, allowing Lansbury and Reid to create.

Revert to 4-4-2 diamond when someone gets crocked at the back.

With three at the back you'd like to see Lascelles sat a little in front of Wilson and Hobbs as he's mobile and will be able to track players, express himself and so on with cover for his occasional lapses in discipline. While he needs to refine the basics like all young players, there's plenty of dimensions to his game and they all need nurturing. The other two can cast him forward and reel him back in as needs be.

Are people forgetting that in the first half it took some great last ditch defending by Holland to stop Spain because they looked all over the place?

I don't see the need to mess about with formations to be perfectly honest.

We don't need to have a set formation, we should be able to adapt like top teams do when setting up against a variety of opposition. I like the 3-5-2 in the right circumstances.

Even the Netherlands vary between 5-3-2, 3-5-2 and 4-4-2 in the same match (Martins Indi goes to Left Back and Daley Blind to Centre Midfield).

But that's what you can do when you have players with such good technique they are comfortable anywhere.

I mean, can you imagine Dan Harding as a Central Midfielder?

I've never liked 3-5-2 when I've seen Forest play it except for that brief period when Bart-Man played the sweeper role. It seems to lead to miscommunication and people seemingly not knowing where they need to be on the pitch. It's a no from me.

We do actually have the players to possibly make it work..as a certain CC comes to mind with that! Most of our midfielders are pretty versatile in being able to play anywhere in midfield so rotating during play shouldn't be an issue
