Default 16th February 2014 16:00 AKA The Peak

At this moment in time we were on a 16 game unbeaten run. 1-0 up vs sheff utd in the 5th round of the fa cup. Potentially Charlton at home in the quarter finals, dreaming of a wembley visit.

This was the pinnacle of our season.

Shoot forward 2 months 12 games and a manager later and we are 10th we little chance of making the play offs.

Where did it all go wrong? I really can't understand this season. What a terrible end to a season that had so much promise.

I'm struggling to remember a season that has gone from such a high to such a low in such a short period of time. Thinking back to the level of expectation at the end of January is just mind boggling compared to the last few games.

As for where it all went wrong? Fuck knows, it's almost beyond comprehension. Yes people will blame injuries, or Billy's attitude or whatever, but does any one thing explain such an extreme change in fortune?

I blame itv for the half time cup draw.

By "relegation battle", do you mean 7th, 12th or 14th?

    Me too. ITV OUT!

    Exactly

That's the thing I can't get round my head. The unbelievable polar opposites of moment in time. It's both extremes.

A top 6 side had it's remaining key players injured and people chose not to accept that reality, but instead looked to apportion blame elsewhere for it.

I hear you lol but he would of got the backing if he wasn't such a cock. He alienated me and I was a fan of his.

It's fair enough, as a person I think he's let us down badly this year and shown why he's not a top class manager - namely his inability to rise above spin & hype, and be the better man (that said it was a tough ask - it was a constant onslaught from the media & fans from day 1).

But that doesn't change the reality of my post. Some may disagree, but that's all this season has been IMO. A top 6 side hit by injuries and fans + owner not accepting that you're best players missing.............means you don't play your best.

    Far out concept I know

Its an amazing how far we've fallen & despite now being closer to the relegation places that the top two we're still only four points off the play offs!

I think I'm right in saying this our longest run without a league win since a 17 game run in the 2003-2004 season which saw Paul Hart lose his job. Even Cotteril didn't take us this long without claiming 3 points!

At least it lowers expectations for Pearce

Not just saying its down to just losing one or even 2 players but the Lansbury and Hobbs injuries were massive. There was a frightening drop in Lascelles performances for a start. Lichaj had been great too. And was ruled out about the same time. As was Vaughan. Reid then had too much pressure on him which help cause his injury. Season over. The players that have come in Raddy, Collins, Halford, Jara, Moussi, Greening and Fox have been largely woeful.
Even when you look at the Preston game, on the night Lansbury's injury was announced it was a woeful performance.
Roll on next season. And I just hope SP gets more luck with injuries than we have had this season.

It's not a hard concept and the vast majority was agreeing with you at the time and so was I. Towards the end of that run he looked like he turned the corner with his attitude. His press conferences were better.

Then he chose to assault a ref and everyone else was punished because of it.

Did he deserve more time. For me of course. Did he merit it? Absolutely not

To be fair, we were far from a convincing side in that 16 game run and we rode our luck a bit.
There were a lot of draws, we hardly comfortably beat Preston either and Sheff Utd away was waiting to happen in my opinion.

It has been a bizarre season though. Just a combination of things has resulted in what we have now...

    - Injuries
    - Signings that haven't delivered
    - Negativity
    - More injuries
    - Squad players struggling
    - Manager sacked
    - Managerless

Looking at that without even going into depth says it all.

    Fair comment & great post/point.

Again, stepping away from Billy it's an inherit naivity with some of our fans and unfortunately our owner, which just seems to want to ignore reality.

We had the same with SOD - here's the plan, here's where we are, here's what we need to take it to the next step.......nah let's rip all that up coz the fantasy's more enticing than working on the reality.

At least Pearce's appointment adds to all that myth and fantasy and can make it fun at least. Even if we're fighting relegation with Pearce here it'll be enjoyable

That could be the description of the season on Wikipedia.
Just need to add-School ground play antics between Billy and the Media.

    Great summary.
And that middle point/paragraph is the reason why I've been saying we need a vision.

Swansea have tht now. They have a style of play that runs through the core of the club. So when they sacked Laudraup they don't need to go through the club taking out key personnel and replace them with what the manager wants. It's inbred into their culture.

A new manager of course will bring in his select few but he doesn't need to bring scouts and a whole new youth team set up because the club would already be tailored to suit this style of play.

What happens with us we change manager that has a different philosophy to the last. Staff get chopped and changed and more importantly there will be players that they don't fancy. Tactics totally change from one manager saying I want u to run like fuk for 90 minutes to others saying press only in your own half (for example)

But again let's face reality. In theory I agree, but is Fawaz someone who's disciplined/wise/focused/patient enough to employ such a policy? It's kinda like asking the Sex Pistols to become virtuosos and polish up their act

A lot of folk have talked about the CEO coming in, but are we confident he'll be the right man? Doughty did similar with Arthur and my God what a disaster that was.

Which is probably why they need someone like you or me there. And to pay us a big fat wage too

Great post but I'd probably add.

-great replacement signings that then got injured

Outrageous behaviour on and off the pitch cost us, it kind of makes sense.

I feel better about the club going forward though, than I did soon after 'the peak'

Crippling injuries to key players is the main reason.

For me the peak was early January when we had Reid, Lansbury and Vaughan dominating every opposition midfield.

It only takes a second to score a goal.

Storming out of the Blades game I rang my mate in a drunken haze and basically said how our season is fucked, somehow with it being Forest I knew after that game it was all over. Once we lose one winnable game they all begin to follow suit. Although to be fair I envisioned a play off defeat, I didn't see it being this fucking woeful.

Injuries, lack of belief and off-the-pitch shenanigans have cost us this season. Davies was a c*nt and he had to go, but it's a shame we couldnt get anyone to fill the gap until the summer. The play offs were gone about 5 games ago, but would be nice to finish with a bit of a fight.

That game really fucked you up didn't it mate?

My mate does a great "when I was in 'nam" routine with the lasses when we're out on the pull. He starts hearing choppers, seeing Charlie and all sorts.
