    Default Those Winter Olympics!

Do you British people care at all about the Winter Olympics?

Here, it's a big deal. Obviously because it's one of those times we actually stand a chance of winning anything. Or almost everything, really, except hockey and figure skating.

The IOC is the most corrupt and kleptocratic little gentlemen's club there is, and giving the WO to Russia and Sochi is just one of many dubious decisions in the past few decades. Despite all this, and the anti-homo legislation, Putin and doped-up Russian athletes, I am sort of looking forward to watching Norwegians rack up the medals in cross-country and the biathlon. Might get a ski-jump medal or two and one in the half-pipe or one of those new snowboarding competitions as well.

Sochi is located so far south that it's useless as a winter resort, and despite all that, it still is the host of the Winter Olympics 2014. Bless those corrupt wankers of the IOC!

I like watching the head first down the run on a tea tray event

If it snows in London we get to watch ten million cockneys attempt their own version of the Winter Olympics.

Funnily enough we were talking about this at work yesterday. Most people didn't even know it was happening.

Last time anyone watched was for Eddie the Eagle.

I'm looking forward to it, mainly for the ice hockey, ski jumping, bobsleigh and skeleton. I believe a Jamaican bobsleigh team has qualified this year

I like the Olympic ice hockey tournament, it's been quality since they allowed pros. My bet is on the Canadians, the US, Russia or those Swedes again. The US being the far shot there.

Ski jumping is simply amazing to watch. The idea of setting off on a slope that's just steep with a jump at the end, it amazes me still. I tried once, and it hurt. A lot. And that was a small 60 m installation.

Their 4 man team first qualified 1988 and they crashed and burned on their last run. They must have had balls the size of melons to even try. Good effort.

I find Curling strangely addictive. Housework on ice!, probably explains why our women are good at it.

I'll be watching some of it, mostly highlights though, unless I get bored at work and can manage to secretly watch it.

No, they are too busy milking a victory from 30 years ago.

I love Winter Sports but under the Olympics' control it always leaves a nasty taste.

It's a bit like the FIFA, just a bit worse. And in Russia.

I want to be excited by it. I love the summer Olympics. It is the only big sporting event that tops the World Cup for my money. And yeah, the IOC is a bit dodge, but it is still probably slightly better than FIFA. But we're not good with snow though.

I'll watch it. GB generally being terrible at snow does help generate excitement here. It is never a given that we'll manage to successfully arrange some transport to get our team to the village. Some of my Canadian friends will post stuff about it, particularly the hockey. I'll watch that. I've been to see the Canucks. That was great. The only sport in the Winter Games that I've actually played is curling. That was surprisingly exciting.

Anyway, I am sure if you grew up in the right climate it is great having an Olympics every two years. I'll make an effort to get into it.My wife is Canadian, and I've been sent the official Hudson's Bay maple leaf gloves by the Brian in-laws. So after we bomb, I'll cheer for Canada

Curling is suprisingly fun, and actually very watchable, I've found. Unfortunately, our teams aren't any good this time around.

Curling is just bowling on ice- and strangely I like watching both.

Love the skiing though, downhill and giant slalom mainly.

    Oh FFS.

Unfortunately it's only every four years, same as every other 'major' sporting event

I really enjoy the winters though
most of the events could be made up of competitors from anywhere
there's very little natural 'sporting' ability in most of the events, so it mostly comes down to training
(only in comparison to sporting events such as athletics where the best have usually always been so)

Not entirely true, more tongue-in-cheek overview
but basically I love how anybody can compete

Especially how last time Amy Williams wins gold for GB in

They make do with a rail system

I can't wait to cheer for Jamaica either

I think he's including summer ones in there.

I walk around like everything is fine but deep down, in my shoe, my sock is sliding off.

There's some degree of natural "talent" in skiing, but cross-country comes down to who's got the biggest set of lungs and the greatest oxygen uptake really. The alpine skiing events are so close that 1/100th of a second decides. Skijumping is notoriously known for how conditions can create a winner or a loser out of a few seconds of unfortunate wind conditions.

Of course, these athletes train doggedly throughout the year. I would not want to sacrifice all they sacrifice in terms of "the good life".

The downhill slope looked like it was designed to hurt people. I'd never want to try.
