Default LTLF Exclusive- George Boateng Interview

Interview with ex Nottingham Forest midfielder George Boateng.

Q: What are you plans for the future after playing?

I hope to be a manager soon because having past my Uefa B and A badge i hope to be involve in coaching and managing soon. I really find NFFC a great club with fantastic fans and who knows if one day i can be good enough to manage the club.I also love doing media work so i have set up my own media company which will create and produce sports programs for all over the world.

Q: What was it like playing for the Holland National team with so many world class players?

Being Dutch comes with a bit of arrogance and knowing that you are good enough to beat any team that you come up against is something that you learn in Holland as soon as you can play football.I was really lucky guy to have made it to the 1st team of the mighty Oranje because for such a small country we produce the best players time and time again but we seem not to have the winning team which is something that we can learn from the English.I loved every time i was selected even though i ended up playing only 4 games but that was not because i was not good enough but more because we had so many good and better players then myself like Edgar Davids, Philipe Cocu, Van Bommel, Overmars, Ronald de boer, Zenden and later Van der Vaart, Sneijder.

Q: Who are the best and worst players you have played with?

*think in my time it will be hard to say who was the best player that i ever played with because they were so many and all so different but if i have to mention then i would say Patrick Kluivert is his high days and Gaizka Mendieta where amazing to watch but i can go on and name from RVP to David Ginola Peter Schmeichel van der Sar and so on….I dont believe that i played with people who were not good but the problem was that there were too many players who didn't give their all in every game but that didn't make them bad players but more bad attitude. There were many players who i played with who simply couldn't cope at the level they were playing at.

Q: Who are the best and worst managers you have come across and why?

The best managers who i worked with were John Gregory, Steve Macclaren, Louie Van Gaal, Gordan Strachan at Coventry was very good because he got most out of the players he had.I have't worked with lot of bad managers but the one that i would say that was not capable to deal with the demand of managing top players at the top level was Steve Cotterill, from his team talks to his training to his man management skills was below normal standard everyday and not good enough to manage at championship level never mind premier league. We had so many good and young talented players at Forest and they all went to waste because of bad coaching and managing like P. Anderson, Joe Lynch and Lewis M.With the team he took over Steve Cotterill could have easily finished in the playoffs but because of his ego and so many wrong doings he ended up getting the sack shame really.

Q: Who is the most unusual character you have come across in football?

I think the most unusual character i came across will have to be Joseph Job at Middlesbrough, he never owned any iT stuff in the 5 years that i played with him because every time we left Middlesbrough to play an away game he would be as sleep until we got to our destination. He only had this big old Nokia mobile phone which he got from buying a Mercedes and he would spend time on his phone all day.If you were looking for Joseph room in the hotel all you had to do was walk in the corridors and you will hear him speaking loud French haha.We also had to be every morning at 10 and Joseph would speed so fast getting in at the car park at 9:50 but then he would walk so slow from his car to the door of the building that he will walk in at 10:-05 so he then ended up getting fined whahahahahaha. (what a lovely guy)

Q: How would you sum up your time at Forest?

My time at Forest started really well and i was so impressed with the stadium and the fans and the training ground.I remember saying to myself when i played my 1st game vs Barnsley "why is this club still in this division"I played against Forest with Coventry in the premier league so many years ago so it was nice to be returning but what i didn't know was that there were small things that needed to be done before the club would be able to get to the big time.I had great time and enjoyed every time i pulled on a Forest shirt and i was so convinced that we would make it to the premier league and thats why i said in the press that i would give every fan his money back if he or she was not happy with my personal performance over the season!!I was in great shape and i had so much experience in knowing what to do to win matches at the top level that when i was at forest with players like Reidy/Greening/Lewis/Camp and Chris Cohen i thought it would be a walk in the park.We started loosing games and ultimately confidence started getting low and then it became a tough task to get back to winning ways but i have to say also that some players didn't have the mental strength nor the physical ability to stand up and fight for the course when time were hard.My time was overshadowed by Steve Maclaren resigning and the death of the chairman who was such a lovely man. He invited us all in pre season to his house for a BBQ which i thought was nice of him because not many chairman would do that as their homes are private.

Q: Who did you socialise with at Forest? Do you still see them now?

I got on well with most of the players but i was closer to Dexter,Marlon,Greening, Chambers, Lewis, Miller ,Reidy and i still speak to most of them and we even go out in London still.

Q: Where did it all go wrong at Forest for Maclaren?

I think Steve Maclaren thought that he had a group of players who where capable to adapt to every system and he also hoped that the players would know everything in how to adapt to game situation and win games like he experienced in Holland with Twente and Middlesbrough.Steve was used to coaching top players at Manchester United and later at Middlesbrough and Twente and those players know what to do to win matches but if Steve would not tell the players that the opposition can bring 6 players in the box for a corner and he only put 5 up then the 6th player would be unmarked and we would concede a goal little things like that went wrong for Steve and of course lack of funds.I know that Steve wanted to bring top players in but the wage and transfer fee that he was promised was never given to him and that made him look bad. I came to Forest and excepted the lowest contract i ever signed in my career and i even earned more at youth level in Holland then i did at Forest but i did it because i saw the vision and the dream of Steve Maclaren and ones i saw the size of the club it was an easy decision because i wanted to win promotion and play one more year at premier level.

Q: What did you make of Ishamel Miller when you were at Forest?

Ishmael Miller had everything to be a top quality striker for Forest when i was there, He is so quick and powerful and its beautiful to watch him play because you don't see many left footed strikers being so athletic. He didn't perform well in my time i think because he was not coached well by Steve Cotterill and nobody every told him that he should not be standing still receiving the ball because i didn't play many games i ended up watching many games from the stands just like a fan would do and all i could see was that Ishmael was never in movement when he received the ball and there was nobody to tell him and the fans think that Ishmael was lazy but he wasn't because he really worked hard in games and training but if you are watching you would think that he doesn't do anything.I still believe that if a coach can manage Ishmael and teach him how to move and score goals that he can be a very good assets to the club.

Q: How do you expect Forest to do this season?

I think Forest with Billy Davis in charge that the club is more at peace and the fans feel more comfortable with him in charge then anybody because they had previously 2 great years with him and they understand what he is trying to do.I also believe that if there is ever a season that Forest can go up it will have to be this season, you have had a decent start and you are 3 points from the top.My advice will be that the board and the management start putting plans together for january because if they can stay in the top 6 until then, then they will have to spend big in the transfer window to get into the 2 automatic promotion places! Not many teams will have the same funds as Forest excluding QPR and Leicester maybe but i believe that if they can strengthen the team in January that you can get promoted.
Last but not least i would like to say a big thank you to all the fans and people at the club for their support for when i was there because i didn't really get the chance to say goodbye.Thanks.

A very interesting read. Strange that he rates Mcclaren highly. Did he play for him at a club other than Forest? Boro? He had obviously got Cotternils number.

Interesting that the players found Cotterill as clueless as us fans.

I liked Boateng when he was here and thought he could and should have been given a more prominent role.
I thought his replies to the questions were intelligent and well phrased - he answered the "worst player" question really well.
He didn't run down any fellow professionals, but gave a player's insight into why players perform badly.

    Thanks Porks.

    That's really interesting.

Some of his answers are very pointed.

I thought Boateng was going to be good when he came to us, unfortunately not. Reading that he seems like a genuine bloke!

    This is a solid point.

Porks, can you please ask him how we go about claiming our money back from him?

Happy for mine to go to charity but fairs fair, he did say it.
