Default LTLF Exclusive- John Thompson Interview

Interview with ex Nottingham Forest defender/midfielder John Thompson.

Q: Having done a bit of research I noticed you won a European championships with Ireland at youth level, who were the best players in the Ireland team (apart from yourself of course!) and who were the best players in the tournament in general?

It was a big thing for the country, we were only sixteen and playing on our national television station in the final against Italy. Brian Kerr was our manager and myself, Keith Foy and Andy Reid were in team for every game. We one 2-1 in the final and it was a very proud moment in my career. We had some other good players such as Joe Murphy and Liam Miller but the stand out player was John O'Shea who went on to have a great career and is currently captain at Sunderland. Earlier in the tournament we managed to beat Spain who had Iker Casillas in goal, I remember thinking he looked like he was going to be a top class keeper.

Q: Throughout your career you played in various positions, which was your favoured position?

I always said I really didn't mind which position I played, which was true. When I look back at my career I probably played most games at right-back although some of the best games I had at Forest were at centre-half or central midfield. Paul Hart was a big influence on my career and he used to point out how important it was to be versatile. Whilst I agree with this in general, it can also be a hindrance as I got moved around a lot to cover injuries and suspensions.

Q: How do you expect Forest to do this season?

I have been really impressed with Forest so far this season. It's early days but they have had some very positive performances so far. I would really love to see the club back in the premier league, where it belongs! I just have a feeling this could be forest's year as they have a good squad and manager. There are some really good teams in the championship such as QPR, Wigan and Watford so it will be important that Forest strengthen further in January to get them over the finishing line.

Q: Who are the best and worst players you played alongside?

I was lucky enough to play with some great players in my career. We had a great youth team at Forest when we won the Under 19 Premier Youth League with Andy Reid, Jermaine Jenas, Michael Dawson, Keith Foy, Gareth Williams and David Prutton all playing. When I got into the first team I played alongside top players such as Jack Lester, Darren Huckerby, Ricky Scimeca and Kris Commons. At Oldham I enjoyed playing alongside Mark Crossley. At Notts County I played in teams with Lee Hughes and Kasper Schmeichel who were both superb players. But for me the best player was Des Walker, although he was at the end of his career he was still a class act and I learned a lot from him.

The worst? I know he has had an amazing career but did you ever hear about Sol Campbell's one and only game for Notts County?? It was Morecambe away, me and him played at the heart of defence and lets just say we didn't cover ourselves in glory!!! We lost 2-1 and we never seen him again! Ha ha

Q: Who did you used to socialise with at Forest? Do you still see them now?

We probably socialised a little too much at times!! Ha ha! I was probably closest to lads like Andy Reid, Barry Roche, Matty Louis-Jean, Jack Lester, Gregor Robertson, Jim Brennan and Des Walker. We had a really good team spirit in the squad which got to the championship play-offs in 2003 and we all still remain good mates.

Q: Who were your best and worst managers and why?

Best was Paul Hart, a real top man, he was a fantastic coach and I really liked his philosophy on how to play football.
I really didn't enjoy my time at Notts County under Paul Ince, enough said on that one!

Q: Do you have any particular memories/stories about Megson you can share with us? (Friio and Rodgers have given us a couple)

There were definitely very interesting times under Gary Megson. The funniest thing I remember was when Gino Padula took him out at Barnsley away! It was a big game as we were struggling at the time. Myself, Jack Lester and Spencer Weir-Daley were in the stands watching as we weren't even picked on the bench. It was a miserable day and Gino slid to clear the ball beside the dug out but couldn't stop himself sliding. He kept going and eventually hit Gary Megson and they both ended up on the floor, it was hillarious and we were struggling to keep in the laughter in case the gaffer heard us. "Meggo" was clearly fuming! It summed up the game really as we lost 2-0, and I don't think poor Gino played again under Megson.

Q: How bizarre was the Munto era at Notts? Was it obvious from the start something was amiss?

It was crazy! To see people like Sven Goran Eriksson, Kasper Schmeichel and Sol Campbell at Meadow Lane was bizarre but as players we had to just get on with it. Charlie Mc Parland had put together a good side anyway but with the big names coming in it looked like we would cruise to the League Two Title.

However we soon noticed all was not as it seemed. Our wages were paid late, our supposed owners were in the tabloids every other day and creditors were turning up at the ground looking for their money, even the milk man turned up!!! As captain I was dealing with more work off the pitch than on it. It looked as if the club was heading for administration and our title challenge was over.

Luckily Ray Trew bought the club, decided against administration and appointed Steve Cotterill as manager. We went on to win the league comfortably but it was an eventful season to say the least!

Q:How would you describe your current mental and physical wellbeing after the terrible injuries you have suffered? Do you have any plans for the future to maybe return to the club in some capacity?

Unfortunately I have been forced to retire from playing on medical advice due to that incident. It's been a tough couple of years to be honest and not how I wanted my career to finish. I tried everything at Mansfield to get back playing properly but in the end a decision had to me made for my own wellbeing.

I am trying to look forward now and am doing a Physiotherapy degree at Salford University. I would love to return to Forest some day, the club means a lot to me as I spent eight happy years there. Nothing will ever beat playing but it would be nice to run out on the city ground again in any capacity!

Q: Do you have harbour any anger/resentment towards Gary Ricketts? do you feel the FA should've done more to punish him for his actions?

Good Q an A. As a genuine honest player it must be horrific to finish someone's career so i'd like to know if ricketts has any genuine regrets his end sounds like he was out of control that game.

Good stuff from Thommo. Would certainly like to see him back at the club in some capacity in the future. Top bloke.

I think a new thread for the answers is worthwhile. Saves trawling through the old thread to see if the answers are in.

Good guy is Thommo, living in Woodborough now, personally I thought it was ridiculous how lightly Ricketts got off, even if John won't say so which is fair enough. Still plays for Ilkeston now.

Shit, the worlds going to end, a new thread has been started, what are we going to do.

Why get so bothered if someone starts a new thread? Surely you've got something better to do than moan at someone who has posted a brilliant interview on the forum.

Who cares, don't be a bell about it.

Great interview, glad to hear some fond memories from Thommo. Never the most talented in that side, but a good lad who certainly wasn't scared to put his foot in for the team.

was a joke retaliation post - porks posted it on my chalobah thread so I posted the same thing on this one. I don't really have any problem with it and in fact love these Q&A threads - some superb work by porks but when someone takes the piss out of me I retaliate.

At youth team level he looked as good, if not better than Dawson. Think he was slightly older though.

Good old Thommo - by his own admission not the most talented player but a decent hard-working footballer.

And of course he's the pub-quiz answer as one of those players to play for us, County and the Stags.

„I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

Was part of the drink culture at our club that although cannot be proven surely contributed to the demise of Forest to the 3rd tier.
Still, the guy didn't deserve to be injured in such a manner. Best of luck to him for the future whatever it holds.
