    Default Steve Cotteril

Does anyone think it would have been worth keeping him on and giving him a shot here?

Hear me out people! It's the post-season lull, perfect for this sort of drivel.

Now, my point is this. I personally would have given him a crack at it, I just like stability, that's that. Most people on here were glad to see the back of him, but if he had anything going for him it was his abilities in the transfer market. He won league two with Notts at a canter, with money behind him. He also boldly sold Wes and bought Guedioura, and that without doubt saved us.

Overall, it has to be said O'Driscoll's transfer dealings have flopped. I was praising him to the hilt at the time, but overall Collins, Cox, Gillett, Harding, Hutchinson, Coppinger have all flopped, and and that's a large proportion of his signings, and a lot of money. It might be unfashionable, but is it conceivable that had Cotteril had the same backing he could have pulled a few more gems out the bag?

No need for a barrage of hate for Cotteril, just a thought.

He destroyed my love of Forest for a long time. I would not of renewed should he of stayed. I hate everything he represents, he is the living embodiment of pub football. Just thinking about his appointment fills me with anger.

You weren't a supporter under Gary Megson then?

Bit harsh to label Simon Cox as a flop; he was one of the brighter spots of last season I thought, and he's a quality player, albeit a forward let down by our chronic lack-of-service from midfield.

Didn't like his chain and tracksuit. But Pep is probably our best signing for a while, and he produced McCleary, shame he didn't have a longer contract

Flop might be the wrong word, but for the £2m+ fee, we needed someone to fire us to promotion. The point is, is it conceivable that Cotteril would have spent those funds better, and I actualy think it is, as bizarre as that sounds.

He probably has a better eye for a player then Davies. But that's about it.

I wasn't as hard on him as some, he inherited a fucking bad hand, quite how McClaren managed to fuck things up as much as he did in such a short space of time is bewildering.

BUT I look back at that period now and can't really bear to watch any videos, read any articles etc, poor Cotterill was pretty clueless himself and gave some daft interviews, did not seem to command respect, he inherited a shit situation but we probably should not have been anywhere near relegation even still. I am not sure what appealed to Clark and co about him.

We lost Wes and Bamford but arguably had to thanks to not having anyone bankrolling us anymore, not sure it was really his choice, to be fair his transfer dealings were decent, we ended up not needing both Higginbotham and Wooton but that's hindsight for you, when they were signed we barely had a defence. Harewood was a terrible signing but again I think we only had Tudgay fit and it suited both parties for a quick deal .

We needed a new start and maybe that meant no O'Driscoll either, I think that was the plan but we failed to land any of the 'iconic' managers that were lined up and that was a pretty decent plan B or C or D. I think it is harsh to say SOD's signings flopped, he had very little time to assemble a squad and a lot of the players you mention have had a pretty big input in us very nearly making the top 6.

Dont really think any of his signings flopped tbh, i know most would say Collins but at the time we had no defence and we didn't exactly pay a huge price and for lets say the first part of the season he was actually one of the better centre backs.

No chance. As said by others, watching Forest became a chore under his management. It was depressing how bad we were.

I'm going to defend him here.

It's not as if SC came into the club at a good time. He took over from arguably the most shambolic manager we've ever had in McClaren with a squad in turmoil. He was in charge of club with little hope, seething fans and a piss-poor squad. If that wasn't enough you then throw in the sudden death of the club's benefactor with the result of all funds needing to be raised before being spent and almost certain relegation. He brought in Guedioura, he brought in SOD to help, he oversaw the 7-3 against Leeds, he turned Garath McCleary into a superstar and I wouldn't be surprised if our overall record with SC was actually perfectly decent. Sure, the football was crap but you can't make a silk purse out of a cow's ear. He did what we needed to do to survive, and he kept us up handsomely.

I really don't get the hatred for him, there are plenty of managers who deserve it more than him.

    No.

I seriously fell out of love with football under him. What annoyed me most was his press interviews - When we got steamrolled by Leeds at home in what is the worst performance I've ever seen at the CG, "We were unlucky". I also don't think it's a coincidence that we only begun to improve when SO'D came in as a FTC (Which beggars the question - He was free after Donny, why didn't we snap him up as manager instead of shelling 300k on Cotterill?). Raddy and McCleary dramatically improved for instance. His signings were not bad at all but again, how far that is down to SO'D we'll never know. However, I'm certain we'd have bought all of the remaining Portsmouth players if we kept him. So at least Halford would have signed for us regardless.

I think it's unfair to call SO'Ds signings a flop as well. Cox for the reasons chriscl said, Gillett was only a free and had an excellent start to the season and was quite solid before SO'D eventually realized Guedioura deserved the DM role (Then got sacked!). Hutchinson and Coppinger were flops but you could argue it was Chelsea's fault for that. Also, and I know it's an extremely unpopular opinion, but I don't mind Harding and Collins. I mean they're not worldbeaters, but at least we've got a sodding natural LB now and I thought Collins was good overall under SO'D - Then became the scapegoat under AMc.

I was very disappointed and seriously underwhelmed when we hired SOD. That disappointment never left me, particularly when I listened to his interviews. ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Go back to Bolton away last August and see him ball watching and blaming Halford for a mistake rather than picking up his own man who scored. This went on regularly all season, not just after Christmas.

I know this is in bad taste, and generally I am defensive and grateful regarding cotterill, but I visualise him swinging from the rafters of the trent end (main stand side)
