    On the subject of fingerstyle.

I got a John Fahey instructional books and CD. You get about 3 hours of him teaching his own compositions and playing them. He's a strangely fun and engaging teacher, if a bit unfocused. Fascinating stuff.

I always remember him saying, "well, the first thing you learn is alternating bass, then you learn how to play patterns, then you spend all the rest of your time trying to get out of playing patterns."

Wish I could fingerpick. Something I never really focused on, and I'm shite at it.

Same. I’ve got my own odd way of doing it but wish I’d learnt to do it properly like Classical guitar players.

Don't suppose you would call Mark Knopfler, s style finger picking or John Martyn, suppose that's fingerstyle.
I went to see Ralph Mctell years ago, now he could seriously fingerpick. Amazing stuff.

    John Martyn was brilliant.

And I remember watching a documentary with Mark Knopfler, where he explains his technique and demonstrated the solo from Sultans of Swing, and whether you like Dire Straits or not, the ability he has to play that song is awesome.

Knopfler's style & technique is just fucking lush.

Aye, me too. I just lean so heavily on the pick it's unreal. I can do a hybrid to some degree, but it's pretty shit Certainly wouldn't fingerpick live.

I learnt Stairway to Heaven (probably wrong) years ago and any finger picking I’ve done since was based on that. Thumb for bass notes and forefinger rapidly trying to cover the rest.

Any idea on a fix for a ground wire that has come unsoldered on my Strat - would like to get sorted but I don't have access to a soldering iron. Could I superglue it?

I wouldn’t superglue it, the glue will act as an insulator and prevent good contact. As a temporary measure is there a nut or bolt close to it that is also ‘ground’ (be sure it is ground) and use that as a mechanical connection for now.

As soon as you can get it re-soldered.

It wouldn’t be a bad idea to get yourself a portable gas soldering iron, with guitars you can guarantee you won’t just use it once.

If there isn’t a ground screw in the cavity you could try cleaning up the end of the wire and feed it through one of the lugs on one the pots. It has to be a lug connected to ground though obviously.
You will probably have to expose more of the wire so you can twist the loose end secure around the lug.

When I used to repair guitars you’d see all sorts holdings wires in, blutac, cello tape, gaffer tape...

I’m pretty sure it will decline but I also think it will everywhere. We are going to see some sort of recession and a likely result of that will be a decline in guitar sales globally.

We have already seen Gibson and Fender struggling before this so who knows what the future holds for them?

He's a great player but all of his how to stuff seems way way in advance of anything I could even try for now... if ever!

    This sounds awesome though.

I have seen quite a few of his videos, generally quite interesting topics. His style seems to be to give you a taste of something so you can explore further on your own or I think he also does some private online teaching.

I think he studied guitar at one of the big music schools (Rotterdam Conservatory) so he should be good

What he's doing is fairly simple-ish really mate. I wouldn't even worry about the rhythm hand, just get a feel for it and that'll come naturally. His left hand is essentially just playing fairly simple chords, the first few min are all based around the Em bar chord with the pinky & first finger adding a few flavour notes, with the odd add & lick thrown in here & there after.

You'll piss this once you're confident with your chords & know a few scales.

Hardest thing to replicate would prob be the tone he's got.
