My comments were more than a little tongue in cheek and the bass player is a crucial part of any guitar band to a large extent he is the guy who brings it all together.
But the bass is not a virtuoso instrument and if you do go off into these bass solos you do move over to prog jazz and that is a genre I hate with a real passion! Real jazz musicians never did it; did Sidney Bechet have a bass solos in his stuff? No there you go then.
Every band needs a bass player. Now some one will pop and say the Doors didn't have one, which is true on stage but a huge amount of their recorded work includes a bass player.

All of the Doors studio albums include an actual real bass player, mainly due to the difficulty of recording Ray Manzarek‘s Fender-Rhodes organ, on which - during live performances - he played the bass parts with his left hand.

Of their recorded output, only the live Albums („Live at the Hollywood Bowl“ for example) don’t include a „real“ bassist. I can tell you that the legendary John Sebastian (using the alias „G. Puglese“, for contractual reasons) plays the harmonica parts on Roadhouse Blues.

Yes, yes, I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to the Doors.

    Interesting.

One could imagine they’d get a bit cold, turning up for gigs dressed like that every night.

You should see their live performance of "Fist Fuck"

Hint: the sex slave woman (their equivalent of Bez) gets fist fucked on stage.

I knew nowt about them before I went to see them other than "they do a bit of a lesbian show". Needless to say, I was somewhat blown away

Interesting, I know they used a succession of 'ghost' bass players. Any way here's one for the nerd file; Lonnie Mack played the bass on Roadhouse Blues.

I'll just leave this here. For all the people who have never heard real jazz musicians play a bass solo.

Roadhouse is fookin twhoresum! Great film made even that bit more specialerer by Jeff's appearance.

On bass solos & stuff, here's the man who told me to give up bass coz I was shit at it & play guitar instead, Chesterfield's very own harmonics master Fred Thelonious Baker...............

Having listened to the two videos posted I have to say that for me (and yes I accept that other folks have a different view) by the end I was slipping into a coma.
No doubt these guys are gifted musicians but to be honest if they were playing that stuff in the next room to me I would shut the door.
Each to his own I guess.
    Sorry

Certainly not Cap Justin is a fine blues player. I have seen this guy a couple of times over the years when I lived over there.
Lovely guitar he is playing in that video (even though it has a jazz bridge!) he makes them himself.
I remember at one of of gigs he played a guitar he had made from a spade.

Nice God I'm so wank at bass

And I'm lost on guitar without a booming fretboard. Can wing it with slides but watching kids like this play really makes me appriciate how in tune they are with their slab.
