His place will now be taken but yet another mediocre player who struggles to get into in club side.

Well, thats a shame he was our best player at the euros and is still by quite a distance our best cb.

That leaves us to choose from the awful lescott, the conedy jagielka, the broken michael dawson (who cant get into his teams starting xi) and....i have no idea who else.

Basically our central defensive options are awful

Wes Brown and John O'Shea have 5 Premier League winners medals - each

Dion Dublin, Darren Ferguson, Keiron Richardson and Luke Chadwick each have a premier league winners medal.

Just because you have one, doesnt mean your a great player.

    Lescott is awful IMO

He was also a virtual ever present for one of the best defences in the country last season. The players you listed have generally been bit part players for their clubs as you only need to play in 10 games to qualify for the winners medal (Lescott played 49 times last season for Man City).

He was also statistically the best tackler in the Premier League last season with a 90.7% tackling success rate, significantly better than any other player.

Tonight I actually feel sorry for John Terry, hounded into court, found not guilty and yet hounded still some more. Everyman has a breaking point and Terry has finally reached his.

Whilst he does not represent, with some of his antics the finer points of gentlemanly conduct, he is after all a footballer, when every player has to pass the 100% personality test to represent our country, we will be left with a very sparse side indeed.

He is also a former Forest player and for that I feel some loyalty to him.
I think its a shame. Footballers are never going to be angels.

Whether anyone likes it or not, john Terry has been one of the best center backs in world football for near a decade. Not surprised by this (announcement) , and I am sure Roman is happy about it.

I don't quite get the ire directed at Lescott. Nor Jagielka. If you think those guys are crap, what do you really think of our guys? Because they are not near the same level as those three.

Lets face it though, he's on the decline. In purely playing terms we need to be looking to future now as Terry's generation of wonderkids have consistently failed to deliver so, fuck 'em.

The Germans had an ageing team of stars who failed to come up with the goods so they they were shipped out to make way for the bright and hungry kids. The kids failed at first but they stuck with them and now, they're not a half bad team. Obviously that wouldn't work here because the average football fan can't see further then the next game and last result (see multiple comments about SOD after one defeat).

Terry will be 33 (I think) at the next tournament. Better we replace him now then just before it starts.

Glad to see the back of him, the man is a disgrace to the sport. The farce of his court appearance merely proved a good lawyer can get you out of any trouble, his defence was ridiculous, he admitted to calling Anton Ferdinand a black c**t, but said it was in a sarcastic manner. Seriously? I hope the FA still throws the book at him and gives him a lengthy ban, this resignation from England reeks of him realising he was going to be punished in the England squad, if that's true they best chase the punishment to a domestic level. If Suarez got banned then so should Terry. I certainly know if I went into work and started throwing racial abuse around I'd get the law thrown at me.

Phil Jones and Micah Richards are the future CB patnership IMO, But right now, Lescott and Cahill are the best two options.

I used to think Joleon was gash, up until last season, the Euro's and the start of this. He's developed into a very commanding, less error prone centre half. Always a threat down t'other end anall.
