    Default Good Referees

Just wondering whom you guys rate as refs go, in England. I like Mike Dean, think he is excellent. But I find that the standard of refs now is a bit less than it was when you had great refs like Jeff Winter and Paul Durkan.

If anybody says Martin Atkinson is a good ref, they should be taken out back and shot. Sorry, but it would be a mercy killing.

Too many of the modern Refs are too easily conned by players diving and cheating - yesterday, both Marlon King and Leroy Lita were guilty of outrageous dives that earned their side a free kick.

Unless that is stamped out of the game (unlikely) things won't change there.

Personally, although he doesn't referee any more (as I think he's now retired) I always thought Steve Bennett was an excellent referee - I remember we had him in the FA Cup at home (coincidentally against Birmingham when they were in the Prem) a few seasons ago and he totally commanded the game, there was no dissent, and he was always up with play.

    Proper old-school referee.

Andre Marriner and Howard Webb in my opinion (apart from when the latter is reffing a Man Utd game)

Jonathan Moss is the best ref we had last season in my opinion. Dowd, Mariner, Foy, Dean and Swarbrick are all usually okay.

I think Howard Webb generally does a pretty good job.

Less regs more common sense is what we need IMO - we've alienated plenty of good/potentially good refs through scrutinizing their actions and punishing individual mistakes too much, instead of looking at their overall standard and contribution to the role.

And it'd be made a damn sight easier if they'd just stick to the rule "If you get the ball it's not a foul" - granted from behind that shouldn't be the case, but for all other tackles it should be. Potential injury threat? Welcome to contact sports - that's why you earn enough to retire after a few years playing.

The outlawing of tackling in recent years is distressing. At one point in time recently, I turned to a fellow ref here in the city and said "I don't think I understand what a foul is anymore." I certainly understand why "going through a player" has become an "issue", and I certainly won't pine for the days of Tony Adams and what he used to get away with years ago. But the lack of physicality is not for me. When I ref mens games here, I call about 5, 6, maybe 7 fouls every game that I really don't agree with, philosophically. But how FIFA wants the game called affects everybody, even little piss ant refs in Canada.

But the scrutinization of refs on "moments of truth" is always going to be that way. If I have a real good game, but miss two key calls, then maybe I was terrible, as those two big moments were the defining ones. It's a tough gig, hardest thing I've ever done in my life. But it's real satisfying when you get the big moments right.

Bring back Pat Partridge & George Courtney.

By "relegation battle", do you mean 7th, 12th or 14th?

Even when he sent off Dawson?

And yes, Atwell is horrendous. The other young ref, Oliver, who called the PK for Wellbeck saturday, is much better , that call aside. I've noticed that Atwell gets zero respect from the players, but this Oliver guy gets along with the players much better. I wonder why that is? It can't be just his calls.

Good game though. Perch looking like he'd walk straight into our midfield.

I was livid at that red. Part of me knew it was a red card, it was a bad tackle. But I thought a veteran ref may have cautionned him and given him a very stern lecture. Michael had been foueld all match by the Sheffield strikers (Asaba? and someone else) and I think that might have actually been his first foul.

Clattenberg, for all his arrogance, is a good ref.

An often underrated player, and I'm really pleased to see a former Forest Captain - and academy graduate - doing so well!

Pat Partridge yes, he gave us the penalty at OT when big nose hacked down o'hare and the scousers are still moaning about it now. George Courtney on the other hand can fuck right off he never gave us anything and even said he would have disallowed Crosby's goal against Man.c because it wasn't "in the spirit of game"

I remember back in the League One play-off semi-final at the CG against Yeovil where we had (supposedly at the time) England's best referee in Graham Poll. I remember him being absolutely abysmal; slow and rash in his decision-making. He still has the arrogance to give his pompous, warped opinions in the Daily Mail most weekends. Along with Mike Riley, who always reminded me of a scrawny bird of prey, Poll was a bad referee.

I agree with the posts above regarding Mike Dean, Howard Webb and Mark Clattenburg being among the current best.

Did they not finally get the boot for innuendos placed in the direction of Charlotte Jackson from SSN?
