    Default Privatise everything.

Thought we should have a thread about what the Coalition has privatised, is in the process of and maybe is planning to in the future.

Already had schools, national parks, the NHS, Royal Mail and now potentially the police force.

When will MP's be privatised to make them more efficient?

Come the revolution, MPs will be the first up against the wall.

In all seriousness though, this creeping privatisation benefits only one set of people: the companies concerned (and, of course, their shareholders. Mustn't forget the shareholders).

Sadly, the population of this country are being sold down the river by a corrupt parliament, many of whose members are in thrall to big business, and who are only interested in their own financial gain.

„I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism“

Haha. I don't normally bother with politics much these days but the proposed NHS bill makes me very angry. I can understand the fundamentalists in the Tory party not being able to see beyond their simplistic ''privatise everything' dogma, but why are the Lid Dems being so compliant with it?
Maybe raising children should be privatised?

There's an arguable case for "breeding licences" for prospective parents......

But you know.. targets for child development, KPIs, payment by results (well done Jonny you're now 4ft 6" here's £50 to clothe yourself), penalties for inefficiency?

    Privatise love and relationships?

Its appalling that they are privatising any part of the police service.

The nhs plans, as someone who works for a private health company that runs a hospital on behalf of the nhs, are equally awful.

I don't understand how the Lib Dems are going along with this.

Just how drunk on the prospect of power were they during the negotiations before the coalition was set up? They seem to have sold every one of their principles down the river for that crappy referendum.

There's a solid case that privatisation brings with it benefits, such as increased efficiencies and competition, which in turn being down prices.

The NHS, however, should be ring fenced.

I marvel at the efficiencies and price reductions that have occurred since energy providers were privatised.

And the rail service, what a well-organised bargain of an experience THAT is!

I make no apologies for being a Free Market capitalist and an entrepreneur, but there is no question in my mind that Multi-National Corporate Capitalism is as bad as Nationalisation, if not wore.
There is a strong case for certain operations to be Nationalised, but they are few.
There a a massive argument in support of breaking up big Multi-nationals and stopping the power of Private Equity Ownership who have no interest in either quality nor service.
Capitalism has been destroyed by greedy accountants and lawyers who have infested the workplace and have NO place in the Board Room of any company.
    Long live REAL Free Enterprise!

You beat me too it. My energy company seem to have mixed up the word competition with price-fixing.

    We've nationalized the banks though

And anybody who can't see the perfect competition model is as deeply flawed as communism is an idiot

Just because something has been done badly doesn't mean the principle is inherently wrong.

Privatisation has valid pros and cons, as does nationalisation. It's just when you listen to some you'd think privatisation was invented to piss of liberals.

I'm not well informed/interested enough to really fully appreciate the pros and cons, I could only think of two examples I have any knowledge or experience of and they're both demonstrably awful. I didn't use either regularly when they were nationalised so couldn't say whether or not it was any better then.

Which things have gone private and been demonstrably improved?

It was more of a general observation than a counterpoint.

The trains are more efficient now.

D'you know that for sure? I never really used trains pre-privatisation - but I wouldn't call the experience efficient or simple. And definitely it's not something that I'd consider cheap.
