Apparently they are 'tones'.

My art teacher drilled this into me at school. Black, white and grey are 'tones', not colours. As I was told off multiple times for refering to them as colours.

Well, putting aside the probably innacuracy of Wikipedia...my art teacher was probably wrong. I mean, who becomes an art teacher?
