Default How will Schteves comments effects the players?

Let's get straight out of the way that "they're professionals and it won't affect them" - we've seen how much a change in manager has affected their playing and they're real people like you and I who gossip, fight, take recreational drugs etc.

Only speculating, but I know that if I was in their position I'd be seriously pissed off that the change in management has brought in someone who, after only 3 months, is considering leaving because they've no faith in the players abilities and can't get the players he 'needs'.

Remember hearing that the players played shite to get rid of Megson, and can see the same happening here - with D*rby around the corner they all know a defeat (esp a heavy one) would see Schteve gone.

    Any thoughts?

i think miller derbyshire and greening were brought on board with the promise of promotion this season, they might feel as if they were lied to and affect there performance .on the other hand they might think steve is a cock for making them these promises then buggering off and be glad to see him go.

Top example of what alienates managers and players. Think there's gonna be a few miffed players turn in for training today.

we may as well write this season off allready after this. It will take a while for the dust to settle and things to turn around. We will lose our next three games by which time we will be bottom three. Survival is our only aim now.
    Thanks Mark.

    Good thread.

People kept saying billys comments would affect the players, and hed been here a while and the players knew him. Mcclarens essentially a new manager coming in and saying this sort of stuff...so its bound to have more of an effect.

That said, if your footballer and a grown up- surely youd have more about you than to be upset by some half comments coming from your manager.

Whats more concerning as a player, if you were one of our top players- is why would you want to commit your future to a club like this. In such a shambles. With a manager who has only been here for 5 games, already questioning his future and a club whos repeated statements about what they will bring in is never actually backed up.

I'd not be feeling good about myself if I were part of that defence, granted I just put on a display of defending akin to Laurel and Hardy but my manager doesn't want to work with me, just replace me or leave himself.

    Cheers chap.

The way Billy made his comments was in a more protective and constrctive manor to me tho, so I think Schteves comments are far worse. For every "our squads too thin" there was a "the young lads are doing great" or "can't fault their commitment". Billy made known that their ability and quality wasn't up to Prem spec, but he also made known that this was only one aspect of success and they were nailing the other aspects such as workrate and organisation. Schteves just said - "Current squad's wank, new players please" And like you say, Billy had earnt some of the right to critisize them, Schteves show them nothing yet but how to spend money.

And your 3rd paragraph is the big worry, I can sense those agents ringing round and arranging deals now. There's too much pressure been put on both the players and manager because of the decision to replace a manager when in a successful period. Basic, BASIC stuff - it's faaar easier to take over a side doing shit than one doing well - eg Clough at Leeds. It's very apparent now that the board weren't aware of the size of the change, but when you employ an ex England manager for a CHampionship club what do you expect?

Glad I found this thread, remember thinking exactly the same when it happened and look at the performances since - why on earth can't others see what's plain as day?

People can blame the players all they want, it's McClarens fault they're playing this badly and it's a gash board who sacked Billy and appointed McClaren in the first place.

Players must shoulder some of the responsibility. It's not Steve McClaren's fault that Luke Chambers lets the ball drop over his head from an opposition goal kick constantly. We're getting the very basics, the things you learn when you're 11 years old, very, very wrong.

He's basically blaming them, so yes, I think they'll be mightily pissed off with him.

Might have a player revolt, Leeds style.

So it's the players gross unprofessionalism to blame. Let's fucking lynch the bastards on Sunday.

By "relegation battle", do you mean 7th, 12th or 14th?

I'm sure there will be mutterings from the terraces.

I wonder if the old "you're not fit to wear the shirt" will make a comeback?

Be fair Mark did say they'd brought SMC in to take us to the next level, what he failed to clarify was whether that level was up or down
