Etxeberria signs to play for free

Etxeberria wanted to give something back to the fans
Joseba Etxeberria has signed a one-year contract extension with Athletic Bilbao which will see him play the final season of his career for nothing.

The former Spain international agreed the deal with his current contract due to expire at the end of this season.

Etxeberria said he wanted to end his career as an Athletic player, adding: "I wanted to do this gesture but never did I want to set a precedent."

Midfielder Etxeberria, 31, joined the club from Real Sociedad aged 17.

This really puts to shame all those players making a fortune out there and not giving a penny back!!

He hopes to reach the landmark of having played 500 games when he retires after a 15-year career at San Mames.

"It's an idea I've had for years," added Etxeberria, who played at the 1998 World Cup and two European Championships for Spain.

Club president Fernando Garcia Macua said: "From the club's standpoint there are not words enough to thank such a gesture."

It's a shame Andrew Cole doesn't feel the same way...

What was the story in the Mirror yesterday about a 34 year old player from West Ham, released on a free and was now playing 11 divisions below the Premiership for some pub team. He had to pay £2.50 a game subs per game. It was in the Surrey county League or something.

    Ian Pearce.

Extceberriaaarraaa was a good player a few years back. I'm surprised he's retiring at 32. Unless he plans to leave for another club.

This will only be a great gesture if the club then use his 'wages' somewhere for their future - ie. Youth Academy and let the fans know where its gone - penny for penny.

Or they spend it on Luke Chambers.

I think Bilbao is the only major European club where the players still care about the club - for obvious reasons...

Didn't/don't Sociedad have the same 'employ Basque people' ethos?

    Talk to me, Goose.

He pays half price subs because he is technically unemployed.

Usually he is recognised as a defender but he has also been known to play backgammon.

No, they abandoned the policy in 1990.

The first non-Basque to play for them was John Scumbag Aldridge, thus ensuring that Forest fans the world over became Bilbao fans overnight.

I've decided I'm starting a game on FM as Bilbao tonight. Rock and/or Roll.

    So 'didn't' was correct

I'm amazed they can get away with such a policy in todays PC laden world.

But we have a similar policy with only buying players who are from Nottingham.

There's not a lot of PC in Spain!

It's actually pretty common out there: although the Basque country is the only region seeking complete independence, the whole country is broken up into proudly autonomous regions.

There's very few people who consider themselves Spanish first and then Andalucian second, for instance. There's not a lot in the way of national identity outside of Madrid. There's also a feeling that if the Basques keep themselves to themselves then that's preferable to them integrating into mainstream society, so few are going to actively discourage Athletic's recruitment policy...

I do love the fact that they are so proudly independent that they'd rather have an English name (Athletic Bilbao) than the Spanish version (Athletico). Strikes me as a bit of a contradiction - surely they should just invent a Basque word that would cover it!

Surely he's actually just giving something back to the club? Or have they dropped ticket prices by £1 a man? Or should they?

They use the English name as they were formed by British migrant workers.

Atletic Bilbao are 'owned' by the fans.

I went to watch Bilbao v Real Madrid few years ago, the atmosphere was incredible. Fantastic place.

So were all the Spanish clubs.

Bilbao are distinct in that they've kept the English name. For instance Athletico Madrid used to be Athletic, but General Franco banned the use of any non-Spanish languages in the country, including dialects. Bilbao stand out for refusing to assent to his directives. That's the point I was making: it's strange that they should find the use of Spanish to be such an affront to their cultural identity, and yet English is fine...

Again, so are all the Spanish clubs. It's illegal in Spain for clubs to come under private ownership as they are deemed to be public property. It would be good if they adopted that ethos here too.

Fair enough, I mis-interpreted your point.

    Yes, I know.

Stokell was making the point that the money would just go back into the pockets of the club. I was just pointing out that Club = Fans.
