Contribute LTLF sponsored Henri Lansbury during the 2012/13 season, and we would like to sponsor a player again next season. To do this we would like your help.

IF LTLF members can raise enough money required to secure the sponsorship of a players shirt for the 2013/14 season we will give away everything to do with the sponsorship as prizes to those that have contributed (prize draw to decide which members win the prizes)

    Default Left Back

I don't know about you lot, but I'm pretty chuffed with what I have seen from Joel Lynch recently. With Bennett back from Palace and Cohen being able to do a decent job at this level are we really in such a sticky situation as we would leave ourselves to believe?

He's a very good back up to have for left back

Yes Lynch has played well, but is this just a purple patch for him, would you be confident asking him to play there for the rest of the season? Also, Bennett, whatever people's opinions of his is still very much an unproven quantity at this level.
I don't think the issue is just about left-back though. With Wilson ready for the off, we're short across the back-four as a whole.

I don't think any of us doubts our defence needs strengthening, but that is not actually the question. At the mo there is no reason to suggest either Lynch or Bennett can not do the job right now in this division. Let's face it, every player needs their chance and just because they are unproven it doesn't mean that they can not achieve. Every player was unproven at some point.

Lynch got into the side due to lack of alternatives. He is in the side now on merit. Even if we brought someone else in, I think it'd be unfair to displace Lynch when he's playing so well.

I agree with you to be honest mate. However, Billy isn't really one for taking 'risks'...

Not lost a game with Lynch in the side. Personally think Lynch has better CB attributes due to him being tall and strong but has played well at Left Back and deserves to stay in the team at present because he is doing well

Have to agree - it's about time we had some more height at the back. Speed & agility is one thing, but it won't necessarily win an aerial ball.

How often have we seen (admittedly diminutive) Earnie & co utterly dwarfed by 6'4, 6'5 defenders? My dad's reaction, & mine, is "bloody hell, look at the size of them buggers! We don't stand a chance in the air...."

Whether Lynch would cut it at a higher level, who knows, but if he can cut it in this league, which he seems pretty capable of, then why not.

Do not forget, it was not long ago that Kelvin Wilson was said to be crap by many posters on here. Much the same way Tudgay was crap according to quite a few on here before he signed on loan.

Lynch is playing ok, let him play, perhaps he will do the same as Wilson and really come on with some confidence and a run in the first team.

He's a CB playing as a LB. We need a proper left back.

Last season , we had the same discussion - swapping Lynch for Perch. Perch actually did all right as a left back and the same discussion happened then as it is now - oh we got perch , we can survive without Shorey. He even scored against QPR from left back and then when it comes down to the crunch , we were reminded by Blackpool that Perch was not a proper left back.

Maybe Bennet will get a game against West Ham?

From what i have seen he looks ok and Billy seems to have a knack of getting improvement from the players.

I personally think Lynch deserves a run of games to prove himself at this level & so far he is doing ok

    That's my thought as well.

Billy won't wanna disturb the back 4 for league games, but maybe change it up for cup games

Has he been up against a tricky or pacy winger yet?. Upcoming games will see people like Routledge, The tricky little Scot at Cardiff, Duffy at Scunny give Lynch a torrid time methinks.

Lynch has been playing well, but in each game hes been extremely lucky not to give away a penalty. Hes done well though, but he seems more like hes filling a void- without really adding anything if that makes sense?

Hes not doing bad, but we still need to get a left back actually sorted. All it takes is someone running at him with a bit of pace, and you can see it ending badly

He managed fine with Savage's pace? Surely there's no tougher test in this division?

The difference between Perch and Lynch for me is that I actually thought Perch was pretty useless at left back. TBH I thought he only ever really looked comfortable at RB. Lynch on the other hand is looking ok. How he will fair against Routledge, etc. is just speculation until he gets a crack of the whip.

Is my memory playing tricks on me, or was that one world-class performance that the Perchinator managed against Newcastle from the left-back position?

No, right back. And certainly not world class - but very good.

I probably should have put world-class in inverted commas, in reference to the way people have over-inflated it since...

...but seeing as he wasn't at left-back it's an irrelevance anyhow.

Still, the best thing about Perch is that we managed to utterly fleece the Geordies for him. That makes him some sort of strange legend.

Surely the difference is that one is actually LEFT footed and the other isn`t?

Lynch is a better option for us at left-back away from home. He adds height and strength to the defence whereas with Bertrand, the opposition were able to lump balls on to that side and watch as time and again their tall strikers simply jumped above him and flicked it on. As much as some people go on about Bertrand he wasn't some game-changing left-back. He was a decent footballer with clear physical limitations. We saw little of him going forward - and have been in better form WITHOUT him. Some would call it coincidence, I'm not completely convinced. Lynch isn't a great defender or a great left-back but he is a fierce competitor.

I want Lynch to become a cult hero, with his song sung to the tune of Dolly Parton's "Jolene".
