Post [LTLF] The gauntlet is down for Billy..

Right then, we are where we are. It’s time to start thinking about how the club moves forward in the short term. The very best we can hope for is loan signings, which Billy has already said he doesn’t want – he wanted signings, he didn’t get them. Whether it’s fair or not is irrelevant [...] Read the original post on Through the seasons before us

Bloody good post from him. The insight about lack of width and its impact on McKenna, ball possession and attacking threat is interesting stuff.

Makes you wonder what's changed from last season really, were we more effective in direct/down the middle attacking play? Or were we just getting better from our wide players (or players attempting to be wide players)?

Should get Commons back, he was literally a wide player.

    great post

You see, we are only three games into the season, no need to panic

Billy needs to earn his money, or walk

Our best football last year came with the wide man generally on the 'wrong' wing with the full backs providing the width as they move into the space they vacate. It worked very well then and led to some lovely football and great results. With Bertrand in we should be able to play a similar way right now. I think the problem is in central midfield, McKenna's getting shut out of games far too easily and responds to any pressure by kicking the ball anywhere and Raddy's being dragged far too deep to have any impact where he's most useful.

I don't think we've got the personel to play 'proper' wingers on both sides, we don't have a left footed one for instance. The central midfield might struggle as well if we play very wide, especially against a side like Norwich who did play very narrowly.

McKenna needs some real quality alongside him to take some pressure off him. As I suggested in a previous thread, Billy has got to take full responsibility for getting the team fired up. We still have some real quality at this club and clubs with less have still managed promotion.

McKenna is the weak link, he went off the boil in Jan last year and everything went top pieces. If he is constantly giving the ball away and not finding other players with his passes (and hoofing it aimlessly high and over the top) then it brings pressure of the counter attack and has been a problem for a long time now.

McKenna needs to find his form again, he needs to stop these crap passes and get back to basics, making sure each pass reaches a fellow Forest player. That will be a good start to find his form again.
