Forest in the hunt for £4m Sheffield United striker James Beattie

Nottingham Forest may make an audacious approach for Sheffield United's £4million striker James Beattie.

United boss Kevin Blackwell was competing with Forest for Derby's £2.5million marksman Rob Earnshaw, but he pulled out of the race because they wanted Rob Hulse in exchange.

    Never say never.

We are both Championship clubs now and if he is unhappy at Sheffield then may well decide on a change and I can't see too many otehr clubs forking out that much for a player in this league.

£4m is a lot for a striker of his age.

However, there's no doubt he'd be fucking class. 22 goals in 36 starts last season for Sheffield United.

Can't see him wanting to come here though.

Doughty put his hand in his pocket for david johnson at £3.5m so there's no reason to believe we're not after these sorts of players. Whether they come or not it the hard part, but I reckon we've done our homework and have got some ambitious targets in mind.

Beattie has regularly said in the press how happy he is at Sheffield United though. Even turned down a multi-million offer from Middlesborough apparently.

    Beattie and Earnshaw?
    Beattie and Tyson?

If the Club are prepared to splash that sort of cash about then I'm all for it!

However - the Mail and all the other papers may rate him at £4m. Our aquisition panel will probably offer about £1.2m!

I reckon we'll sign at least one £2-4m value player, even if it's just so that Doughty can prove how ambitious he is. It also will make the other CCC clubs sit up and take notice.

Mind you I doubt it will be Beattie, if he leaves the blunts it will be to go back to the prem. (ie stoke)

At least we have no competition for Earnshaw now, though.

I'd love Beattie here. His free-kicks are ace!

I just think it's f*cking awesome to be back and being linked with good players for big money again!

Yeah, it's brilliant seeing Nottingham Forest and £4m in the same sentence when it's not us doing the selling.

The only thing that worries me about this, is that we have been linked with high profile players over the last few seasons ie Cole, Sheringham. Then there's Roy Keane and MON for manager. We have always been linked, but for the exception of Neil Lennon, have not signed these players, instead us fans have been drooling with excitement over the prospect and then utterly dissapointed when nothing has materialised. I have no doubt that ND is going to open the cheque book this summer and sign at the very least 2 or 3 players to improve the current squad, I am however a little sceptical that one of those signing will be £4m as I can not see him spending any more than £5m this summer in total.

Hopefully ND will prove me wrong...

I don't think we'll spend £4m on one player. I didn't mean that. I just meant it's nice to see it in writing.

I reckon we'll sign 4 or 5 players over the summer, spending 5-6 million.

    I have faith!

I can't see this happening, the wages along would surely be a stumbling block and I'm not sure he would come anyway.

I do think Sheff U would sell though as 4 million is good for a 30 yr old.

The Blades wage policy is actually very modest.

Aren't they similar to 'Boro in some aspects?

E.g. Pick up a lot of players on the cheap or on a free and pay them plenty in wages.

I would love it if we got Beattie. A great player and proven could easily play at this level for us.

    Come on Nige!!!!!!!

It could be a great buy.

Obviously someone somewhere is putting out this sort of story, and we're being linked to it. Whether true or not, this is a good thing for us.

No longer are we being linked with freebies from the league below and stuff, we're now talking about going head to head with the top clubs in this league.

    Talk to me, Goose.

Remember that one of our best buys of recent seasons was a lad we got from Bromley for 48p. *Millions does not necessarily buy success. *Look at Chelsea for instance.
