LinkPaul Jewell brought new meaning to the transfer window last night when Marseille-bound defender Tyrone Mears had to crawl past the manager's office to collect his boots after defying his manager's orders not to go.
Paul Jewell
In an incredible incident at the club's training ground yesterday, Mears had to sneak in through a window to collect his boots after Jewell told him to ignore chairman Adam Pearson's instructions to head for Marseille on loan.
Jewell claimed he had not seen a fax from Marseille - who were drawn to play Liverpool, PSV Eindhoven and Atletic Madrid in the Champions League yesterday - offering the former Preston and West Ham full-back the opportunity of a lifetime.
Mears went to the club secretary, picked up the fax from Marseille and took it to Jewell's office to try to push through one of the summer's most unlikely transfers.
But despite permission from Pearson to leave for Birmingham Airport, Jewell told the defender that he had to stay.
After another call to Pearson, the defender climbed in through an open window at the training ground, sneaked past Jewell's office and collected his boots before driving to the airport to catch a flight to Marseille.
Brilliant! Brings a whole new dimension to the idea of transfer windows!!

This story has made my day. lol You cannot make it up. lol
I've never heard anything like this.
It must be bad at Derbynil.
Anyone who says Derby aren't a club in crisis needs to re-think. The Chairman and the Manager are clearly not on the same page. End result - laughing stock.
Thing is I hope they don't sack Jewell as a new manager could give them a much needed new lease of life!
its a new modern remake of the 'escape from Colditz'!

Didn't the mail print that thing about us not beating a premiership side for the past 15yrs?

Mears is quite the escape artist.Mears' actions will almost certainly incur disciplinary action and look to have put his career at Pride Park in jeopardy.
Just been to lunch with a tame Derby fan and she was telling me this story lol
She's currently of a mind that they're under threat of relegation if Jewell stays
If a player goes for a trial against a club's wishes you can tell there's serious trouble. When it is down to the manager and chairman if he goes anyway, you can tell they're not happy !!!

Hilarious as it is that Marseille want Mears, the funny part is that Derby rate Mears at £2 millionHave they even watched him play? He's fucking rubbish!
That's rubbish by our standards, he's fucking brilliant by theirs!Originally Posted by wesizleftpeg

The funneist thing for me is... What must Commons be thinking now lol lol
I bet he is regretting his move now.
lol funny story!
I doubt Mears is bothered that this could end his Derby career - it doesn't sound like he wants to stay!
Commons is walking past Paul Jewell office as we speak.![]()
Biggest mistake of his life my arse! lol"I left a message and told him he's made the biggest mistake of his life and to get himself back here as quick as possible.
"Tyrone Mears has no future at Derby. This is a brilliant place to work and he's just signed his death warrant."
I'm sure he's gutted he won't play for d*rby under Jewell again.
